Quick question on the chassis ID stamp locations. I thought these were on the top of the chassis rail on the drivers side. I’ve had a good dig, but can’t find any stamped numbers here. It’s on an SL. My next thought was did these even have body stamps or was it just the skinny VIN plate?

Grab a wire wheel. If it's there you will find it.

I carefully stripped back the whole area and nothing.

It is a bit beat up as you can see in the photo. But it also appeared to be the original paint once I got through the layer of black that someone had previously bombed over top. I went super light when stripping back so as not to remove any stamps if they were there.

It doesn’t appear to have had a new front end on it either. From what I could see it had the same original primer and color (originally gold) as the rest of the car.

Got me wondering:

Were these numbers stamped in the factory, or at the dealers, or when the car was first registered, or something else?

Would there be a difference between NZ new and AUS new cars?

Is there any other place the numbers would be stamped on an LH?

Is it possible some cars never had any stamped body ID’s?

This one is only an SL, so not too concerned if there are no body numbers. Just more interested to figure out why there would be no numbers.

The numbers were stamped on at the factory. The number also appears on the compliance plate.

Number in this example follows ALH on the same line as the build date.

Unfortunately NZ built cars will not have an ADR compliance plate, just as Aussie cars built for export to NZ were not normally fitted with ADR compliance plates, and I will dare to speculate that perhaps NZ built cars had the chassis number stamped in a different location.

Don't know much about the big cars, but didn't a few of them loose the numbers after a prang?, when new parts/bits were fitted as part of the repair process?

Take it to an engineering shop & ask to borrow their magnetic particle tester. If the numbers are there it will show them up. 

 

Perhaps the numbers aren't there, but they shouldn't be stamped anywhere else.

I have always been led to believe that this is the case. Cars for sale in Australia had an ADR plate, and on this plate was stamped a number. Now this number was then stamped in the engine bay in the location shown...... However, since NZ cars did not get the ADR plate, as we did not have to comply with the Australain Design Rules, It stands to reason that there was no number stamped in the engine bay, as there would be nothing to match it to.

I have not seen a number yet on a NZ new car with no ADR Plate.

Going by the weld holding that panel to the rail, I would say it has been replaced.

Weld doesnt look factory.

Yes..That's my point....lol.. Because this car was destined for sale in NZ, it was never issued with an ADR plate...And as such does not have a chassis number stamped into the engine bay.

Stevo75 owns a Trentham (NZ) built LH Torana SL 1900.

 

An Aussie built LH Torana NZ export will have a chassis number but no Australian compliance plate.

Stevo, I'd be going a little further, maybe with a wire wheel.

 

I'd be pretty sure that NZ cars would've had a chassis number, but if they weren't required to have a charcoal canister then Trentham may have just stamped it further inward?

 

I'm not sure if I'm seeing things but I keep imagining shapes in that panel that might be stamped numbers...

Like I said, not too fussed if it doesn’t have one. It’s not an A9X or anything. That would be a problem 😆

It could also be that the NZ ones just didn’t have stamps as suggested in the replies.
