Not sure that I missed anything relevant to the Summernats in what you posted Rob.
I think you are the ideal unbiased candidate to come along next year and tell people how you found the event.

I like that aqua Torana on Page 1.!!
.
I've also seen tonnes of clips of crap behaviour on the net. And I know I couldn't handle being there with a car. If I was doing laps and a bunch of idiots started to rock my car demanding a burnout I'd be out of the car in a flash to sort them out.
But there seems to be a great mix of cars there. From all that I've seen online I don't know that the Porshe was my favourite. But then again I can't see the build quality etc from this side of the ditch.

This is the bizarre oddity/engineering achievement of this year.
A big act to follow after the 2 x Ecotec holden V12 rod of last year.

Thats right, two LS V8s linked not crank to crank but by a single diff with individual centres.
Hopefully the centre link axle doesn’t need replacing often.
All done for the joy of shredding tyres!

Its come a long way from the era of “Boobs Blowers and Burnouts” and the shuttle busses for the brothels at the front entrance.
All that’s left is a small classified.

Great content Rexy! Love reading your posts about the Nats each year, hahaha.
Regarding having a nice car there, look there are certainly times when you probably don't want to have a pristine car on the cruise route if it's tidy.
One of the things that really irks me is that the most excitable meatheads just really want to be viscerally involved... they want to be so immersed in the goings-on that they jump the barriers to be half a foot away from a car when it's doing a burnout, they want the rubber in their face, they want to feel useful by touching the side of your car as if that somehow enhances the spectacle of the burnout, and shit like that. I do not want to take a car out and have some maggotted yewwww boy touching my car because the crowd energy is peaking.
BUT the cars that are out there at that time, by and large, know what they are getting into.
The appeal for many is that the event is not a nanny-state. And that's a reasonable thing to like about it! In practice I think the combination of alcohol with everything else, it makes it a little over-the-top. Very little harm actually happens, but people's consideration levels are a bit low for my liking at the very "hot" times of the nats. I need to clarify, we are talking talking Main Street specifically here, say 6pm on the Saturday. Every other "hot" area is very easily avoidable at all other times.
The comment about being angry/violent about people on the side lines trying to egg you on to do a burnout here is ridiculous. If you are someone who can't deal with a request like that, I would not recommend being an entrant at the Nats. I also wouldn't recommend having a cool car generally if you can't deal with someone asking you to do burnouts and stuff; I even get that on the street often, lol.
I originally tried to quote the image of the grey Porsche, as with the Astill Peoples choice Falcon. I’m sure the owner of the 911 barely got a finger nail dirty building it.
Yeah... ahhh that's most of the cars in the Elite hall. If people don't like the 911, then that's fine (overall, I'm a fan of it for sure), but yeah don't bag the 911 out for not being owner-built without casting the same judgement more broadly. I hope there are some, but I don't know if I encountered any owner-builders in my conversations... like everything was credited to a particular custom shop or various businesses for all the significant stuff. :(
Plenty of pristine show cars on display! Not many places where you can see that stuff. Some really awesome design work, incredible fabrication work... Some of the cars are super boring design-wise, some of them have too much going on and are really gaudy, and some of them are full of complicated work and they are just incredibly inspiring, creative works of automotive art. They are typically built for high visual impact, utility doesn't play much of a part if any in most of them, but they ALL have an incredible level of finish.
I think getting my car in there was a lofty goal and one that I am proud of, but I did have mixed feelings about how it really fitted in there. A lot of my brightwork is rough as... the anodised aluminium is totally unrestored, my panel gaps aren't great, mine leaks oil (I think the rear cam plug is leaking) plus it has stone chips already, etc. and I don't know that the judges liked it all that much because it just isn't that much of a showcar. But my car seemed to pull a lot more interest than some more pristine cars around it consistently over the days - I thought that was just my own ego telling me that but then a lot of others said the same thing, and I LOVED talking to the interested punters when I was there with it. That was just spot on.

I have been going to the Nats for 30+ years and this year was by far the biggest and most feral. They do need to do something about the behaviour of the dickheads who are spoiling the event. Don't know the answer but it was really out of control. Maybe not serve alcohol until after lunch or something like that.
I entered my HQ there and was too scared to drive it around after 4pm due to the spectators being so pissed and hands on. Plus the cruise route was hopeless and took an hour to get a lap in. That was no good for my poor button clutch.
Good parts were catching up with a few members from here, mainly Harvey and heath for a quick chat. And also getting a great result for my car on the hub dyno. The old hub dynos read a fair bit higher than roller dynos from my experience.
Some very nice cars there though for sure. Won't take mine again next year, will just turn up as a spectator.

Surley the highlight of the event was Michael Silk's Datto 1200 making 1077 horsepower at 10,500 rpm with its factory block and crank Nissan 4 cylinder!

Thanks for sharing your pics Rexy - I especially enjoy your commentary that goes along with it!
I really enjoyed the event, but it could have been even better if the ferals didn't shut it all down on both Friday and Saturday afternoon. I was really looking forward to cars cruising into the night whilst I kicked back, talking shit with friends over several beers... Still did the beer drinking, but it would have been way cooler with cars and stuff cruising around and into the night!
It'd be good if the organisers at least come out and say they're going to make some changes. I think 2,700 entrants is just way too many. I reckon I would have been lucky to cut 10-20 laps this year (with most of those happening before the public was allowed in!), where as last year I lost count how many I did. When it takes 30 odd minutes to complete 1 lap, its just not worth it. Also, there are way too many people who just can't handle or control their alcohol consumption.
I love a breakfast beer, but the key is to be able to still be a fully functioning human being for the majority of the day and not act like a dickhead. So if Summernats want to sell copious amounts of alcohol from 9am in the morning, then maybe they should also hire night club style bouncers to help control rowdy patrons and also help practice responsible service of alcohol. If you're too pissed, you get kicked out and put in a taxi. Security at Summernats only ever seem to be watching the cars on the cruise route and not the 10s of thousands of punters (95% of who are perfect!).
Anyway, in saying that. I did enter again for next year already. It's the place to be to start the year, particularly if your business revolves around modified cars like mine does. There is no better place to get your name out there and talk to so many people about what you can do to start off the year on the right foot.

What the hell??? factory block and crank?? Did he have a turbo the size of a 40 gallon drum??

^^ Yep.
One video I saw was a nice blown and injected Commodore idling at a standstill on the cruise route, and some knob reached over the bonnet and and flicked the butterflies open. If that happened to my car, security would be needed to pull my hands of his neck.
