^^Yes, you'll have to watch that. It'd be good for you to get photos of the heads of original bolts to make sure you buy Grade5 where you need them.

Thanks Guys it’s certainly important, Just out of interest Can Stainless Steel or even High Tensile bolts be used instead as both kinds are of greater strength to those being replaced ?

Grade 5 are imperial high tensile. I don’t think stainless are high tensile though, not normal ones anyway.

So grade 8 would be overkill ? And if suitable this is what I’ll be sourcing for all…

By that chart posted above Grade 5 is the rough equivalent of grade 8.8. Grade 5 is imperial or SAE in psi. Grade 8.8 is metric tensile strength in MPaOn to a DIN standard.

Stainless is of no greater tensile strength than a mild steel bolt. They should never be used in any suspension or brake etc mounting applications. They are more for decorative , lower strength applications.

Another mention,
is that manufacturers prefer rolled threads.

Cold working (rolled) increases tensile strength at least 30% more than cut threads,

In tensile applications, the cut point of the thread is a point where a crack can start,
where-as a rolled thread, the thread is forged (metal squashed into a thread shape)
 keeping the metal structure.

You can tell a rolled thread by the smooth finish of the thread surface (caused by force) :3gears:
also by asking your supplier what process they use.

I need a double check from someone,

to see if the K-frame out-rigger bolts (2 off),

 are 6 point star rating.

(considering, they take the full force in an accident)

My '69' ones are a bit worn, but can just make out extra pointers:

p.s. We don't want to put someones life at risk for wrong information.  :deal:
