Would anyone happen to have an engine bay picture of a LH V8 Torana with Factory Air Con and Factory Air Cleaner?

A long time ago, REDA9X put up a pic of the only (to his knowledge) A9X with factory air. May not be the same, but it's a start.

Looks like that and this are the only pics I have that fit the criteria...

Neither of them are LH though, sorry.

AFAIK there is virtually no difference between LH V8 & LX & V8 as far as factory A/C goes.

The first pic (orange car) is true factory A/C but the GM A6 compressor has been replaced by a smaller Sanden compressor.

Does an LH use the HQ/HJ vacuum heater switch (3 way)? The AD27A Holden engines use that 2 way one shown in the photos.

Reason I ask is, I had a well known Facebook Torana Expert stating that my air cleaner was incorrect.

I was always under the impression it was to suit an A/C V8 Torana. It has the PCV hole at the front of the air filter base.

I purchased it as NOS and was a complete kit. Bendix Air Filter. Vac hoses and stove pipe etc.

The intake snout points slightly forwards compared to a standard air filter base. I just assumed it was to provide some clearance for the air con assy that’s mounted up against the firewall.

I was supplied with a pretty good image of a stock A/C car but it’s a bit tricky to tell about the air cleaner snout?

Firstly Brad. Facebook. Expert. Two words that Don’t belong in the same sentence!

The aircon Torana air cleaner has the PCV return at the front of the passenger side rocker cover whereas the standard one is at the rear. Both have the PCV connection at the front of the driver side rocker cover.
This is the opposite to HJ where the PCV is passenger rear and return driver front.

I think the reason the PCV & return are opposite between HJ Holden and LH Torana is the oil filler is on driver side on Holden and passenger side on Torana, you want the PVC on the opposite side. My guess is they moved the Torana filler to passenger side to make it easier to put oil in.
The aircon Torana has the return moved to the front of the rocker cover due to clearance at the back of the rocker cover.

To be honest I can’t think of any other Holden or Torana that your air cleaner could have come from. Bar the decal the only difference between LH and post ADR27A LX is the little port under the earlier one for the choke air source.

I use the term “expert” with a lot of sarcasm.

This has two ports underneath from memory. One goes to one side of the autochoke heat pipe. I think one also goes to the vac port tree at the rear of the manifold. And it has that stove pipe flex silver pipe to the exhaust manifold.

For an LH and early LX it should have 3 hoses attached plus the big pipe to the stove:

Two to the little air pre-heat switch (with the metal prongs either side of the hose connections), the hoses go to the valve on the snout and to the back of the carby.

One points straight down, it is just above the choke operator when the air cleaner is on. It connects with a short hose to the steel pipe that goes down to the back of the RH exhaust manifold.

The difference between an LH one and a 6/76 on LX one is that 3rd hose attachment point.

Yep. Your right. 3 ports. 1 to choke pipe. 1 to vac tree. 1 to auto therm AC valve. And 1 big one to the stove pipe.

Correct. The heater tap for LH & early LX (pre-ADR27A) has 3 outlets, the LX ADR27A has 2.

I don't think any go to the vacuum tree. There should be a port on the carby for one side of the switch (other side goes to the air cleaner intake valve).

The are hard to get. I have 2 x NOS for my HJ Premier, but finding them took a bit of work.

I have it plumbed like this. The vac tree would have a vacant pipe otherwise.

That is a 4.2L. I think 5.0L are different. Will check.

I just checked the HJ, LH and LX parts catalogues. LH-LH is as that image shows. HJ definitely shows the vacuum source for both 4.2 and 5.0L at the back of the carb. However the vacuum tree diagrams are the same as LH showing pre-heat off the vacuum tree. Will go and investigate more.

Edit - its a Furphy. I looked at HQ and it is off the tree. The HJ diagram is for those few Pagewood HJ that were trial fitted with ADR27A cr@p, but the book doesn't say so. HX and HZ show the vacuum source on the carby and the nipple missing off the tree for pre-heat.

Yes correct. What twigged me to it was I went and looked at the 7043283, 7043284 and 7045281 carbs I have in the shed (all of the HJ and LH Quadrajets), and none have the port as shown in the images. However, the 17056280 (HX and post 6/76 LX Quadrajet) have it. I knew HJ were the same as late HQ and then it prompted me to look at HX and HZ and the air cleaner image in those was the same as the HJ Parts Catalogue shows. So, whomever put that image into the HJ parts catalogue originally neglected to label it as HJ "with evaporative and exhaust emissions controls" which is what they do for all the other images where it is different to just "with evaporative emissions" only. The HQ book is the same as you posted up, the HJ book should have that as well as what is there labelled appropriately.

I'm glad you got the big pre-heat pipe with the air cleaner. I had to go looking overseas for one - damn hard to find. Gates 28093 (1.5" x 18" (expanded)) is the item.

Oh wow. I thought it may have been readily available at Bursons or the like….? It’s actually almost in a preformed shape. It fits perfectly and it not bent or linked at all. It was all brand new when I bought it in 2011.

Getting back to the off subject part...  This is a NOS LH controller showing the three vacuum ports for temperature at the top, (behind four speed fan switch) and four vacuum ports at the bottom for changing air flow.

What was the third valve in the heater pipe for?
