Getting back to the off subject part... This is a NOS LH controller showing the three vacuum ports for temperature at the top, (behind four speed fan switch) and four vacuum ports at the bottom for changing air flow.
What was the third valve in the heater pipe for?
I think only ports 1 and 3 are used. Port 2 must be a vent or not used at all. Port 1 is vacuum source. Port 3 is water switch.

Funny how he used to always message me asking for advice or help just to build a replica of my car.

I don't have a standard air cleaner to compare but he may be right , if the snorkel came out at 90 degrees it would hit the evap box and VIR pipes . The last picture with the red circle is where the LH had an extra pipe

I’ve said to him it’s to suit a V8 Torana with A/C and as I assumed, the snout cannot sit at 90 degrees as it would hit the A/C box on the firewall, which your pics clearly show.
He was private messaging me and wouldn’t accept what he was being told. Once I had enough, I called him “an expert”. And thus he has blocked me on Facebook.
Yes, that circled pipe is the one that connects to the auto choke pipe that runs through the exhaust manifold.
I don’t think my snout points as forward as yours. I’ll take another look.

Just tell him to go back to school.

As you can see the snout angles slightly forward. Which makes sense so it can clear all that A/C gear on the firewall. It looks pretty busy there!!!!

Sonds like a tool, but its Facebook so can't assume much in the way of IQ.

That would be a nightmare! But awesome to be able to drive around in cool comfort instead of sweating ya ass off.....
Yes, I believe a non-A/C air filter base has the snout at 90 deg to the front of the car and facing the inner guard square.
I feel like mine angles back towards the firewall a little more than yours. It looks like my oil cap is more visible in that overheard pic?
Will the system not work with the new modern gas used these days?

If you were wanting to do it Brad you wouldn't do it as per original. You'd leave the heater box as it is and just not have it connected. Remove the heater unit and ducts inside the car, and replace it with a Vintage Air unit, either the GenII or the Compac. Make up a way to support the original vents where they belong and brackets to support the aircon unit where the existing heater/fan and run ducts under the dash to reach those and the other factory locations including the demister. You could use an original Harrison compressor mounted as per original or fit a Sanden style unit. Find an original condenser or fit an aftermarket. You'd just have to cut under the original plastic box on the firewall to route the heater hoses and aircon pipes through it, or delete the box and make up a plate to bolt where it goes and use a 4-way bulkhead fitting. Keep your existing lower dash fascia and find an old one to clean up, paint and cut out the right size for the Vintage Air controller which would mount exactly where the existing dash controls are. See attached link, the installation instructions are in a pdf link inside the link, shows you the dimensions. This fits perfectly in a HK-HG dash where the heater/demist controls go without cutting, not sure about the hole size in LH-LX as my last body of one of those is long gone. Just needs the plastic trimmed neatly around the hole.

Here is the details of the Compac, it is only 10" wide, 7.5" deep and 5" tall. Should easily fit where the original heater box was.

I’ve butchered this one now. It’s got the front PCV port blanked with a grommet. And I’ve cut a hole at the rear and transferred the PCV port to the rear.
Worthless now.

Just incase anyone's interested in resurrecting the old factory air I seem to have managed to do it even though I continually read it will only work with R12. I decided to try the Hychill Minus30 as no license needed to buy it as its pretty much just BBQ gas in a can. I rebuilt the VIR with all new O rings , replaced all the hoses and flushed everything internally except the compressor. I have a rebuild kit for it but as it was reconditioned 30 years ago and not used much I figured I'd leave it and try my luck, if it leaks then rebuild it. I also bought a vacuum pump and evacuated the system for a day and it held vacuum so figured so far things were going ok. Put in 350 Grams of gas , they say 340 but went a bit over , fired it up and it went instantly cold, low side sat at 30Psi and high was only 160Psi, it was only just over a 20degree day so not a real big test but I got a constant 2 degrees out of the vents. Time will tell though.

Did you add some lubricating oil for the compressor?
