Yeah I've got some fine spline stuff (fine 3.08 centre I will raid for parts), and I have two LXs that I've never pulled an axle out of so I imagine I have some fine spline axles there :P

Still I want a spare pair of fine spline LX axles.

ROFL @ you guys with the "paint XXX" part lol.

It would appear heath is in the process, so leave him alone, it will get done!

Those Lx's, if they were 202 4spd or 253/308 powered by any chance, that improves the chances you have some fine spline axles.

Taking a look at that diff all prep'd & primed is making me want to clean up my housing, but on the other hand i don't see the point until i get new bearings for it. I guess while it's looking old, i can dummy up my Vh commy rear disc brake set to see if it will bolt up or not......

Cheers

Thats a lot of effort to go to for just a banjo :P i remember before fitting the 9 inch to my old car i first ran the course spline which always blew the diff centres apart so i then changed to the fine spline setup and thats when it started snapping axles..lol. At least when i blew a centre i could remove the axles!! but when they snapped off inside the centre that was a real pain..buy a real diff when you can afford it imo. :tease:

Cleaning the banjo up or trying to fit Vh disc brakes man? I'm sure heath plans on a "real diff" when he can afford it, just like i do, but there are so many other things to spend money on, that if a fine spline banjo will do the job for a while, it's worth it as it's not much money to spend to get the job done, in comparison to quotes i have had for a borg warner conversion, full rebuild, lsd 3.45 center, fitting the disc brakes & so on.

Cheers

At the moment, what I want to do is do up a Banjo for this car. So that's what I'm doing. If I blow it up then I will probably try something else or change my driving style. How this is a "lot of effort" I don't understand, so far I haven't spent a dollar on it (apart from consumables that I already had like paint, sandpaper etc) and it's been a bit over a day's work. It's not like I don't enjoy doing it, and yes I believe that there is a bit of time involved in getting a Banjo to work properly, if it will just be 'set and forget' then it will have been worth not half-arsing it. I'm not gonna argue about what diffs are the best but if this was a burnout car I don't think I would put a Banjo back in it

Hey i guess it was just a polite way of saying that the banjo is a dinky little diff not worth spending time or money on..wasn't looking to start a debate on it just adding my opinion based on previous experiance with many banjo diffs overs the years take it however you want. :dontknow:

A good fine spline Banjo will last no worries behind the six in a Torana as long as its not being punished. The biggest hassle these days is that very few parts are left in good condition...

Apply as much care with the assembly as you did with the cleaning and painting and it will do good service Heath

Yeah mate 3.36 which is what I was after but it's course spline (the moment milton said "out of that LH" i was like *damnit* lol). But I've got that 3.08 FS gearset from a while back to raid parts off.

Hey Heath, that bango you got off me. That was 'rebuilt' when i bought it, so hopefully a lot of the parts of it are nice and new.

I take it thats the 3.08 that your 'raiding parts off'?

Hey Heath, terribly impressed with the way your car has some up. And that's before knowing that someone the same age as me put his own time and effort into doing it himself. Kudos to you.
Are you planning to go LSD? I mean, with all those banjo bits lying around, I figured you would have found something to make it LSD,or may have snapped up that 3.55 LSD centre that was in the for wsale thread last week... Am I silly or is there less chance of it going bang with an LSD as you have both axles working on an even workload (in wheeelspin I'm talking about) as opposed to one just screaming away?

Yep, unless something goes horribly wrong I will be driving up, don't know where I'm staying yet!

say 30 bucks heath and the pair is yours can even deliver

Are they for an LX/UC? If so I'll definitely take them. Drop em off when you get that chrome gear off Rob :)

I take it thats the 3.08 that your 'raiding parts off'?

Interesting, haven't touched that one actually. I've just got a 3.08 gearset that was left at my house at some point (chopper? milco? I dunno) and it has no housing so that's a good donor.

Thanks Matt. And the axles might get a bit less torque at full boar but it means they are twisting opposite directions whenever you turn a corner etc, so I think there's more stress, particularly on the centre assembly. Haven't been able to afford an LSD centre yet, I did have some creative ideas but Rob kinda shot them down (fairly) so might be outta luck there.

LSD is a bit of a waste of time in the Banjo if you're looking for long-term reliability. If you hammer it enough that an LSD would be useful then the diff won't like you anyway, and the poor little LSD centres aren't the greatest. You definitely don't want it locked in any way, the axles won't hack it.

Driving style has alot to do with it.

If heath is out ripping skids all the time and doing figure 8s in the end of the nearest culdasac then it wont last.

Welded banjos arent the best long term solution, but they last long enough if you arent popping big rev clutch dumps and helis everywhere.

Also, I think Heath is running a fairly small (width) rear wheel/tyre atm.

Grip levels probably wouldnt be enough to worry about snapping axles anyway. :)

Well I (despite my name) never rip skids... I think the LC has copped one big revv dump and it wasn't that crazy, the wider wheels helped it just grip and go. Mind you I do flat shift into 2nd and the thing gets loose and now the diff is now a little noisy.
I guess that's also because it is a coarse spline but the plan is to eventually go BW. I thought that was a relatively easy conversion for LH/LX? as in has a very similar length and just needs the brackets changed.

If you don't plan on ever having any dish on the back of an LC, you could probably get away with the same length? (R31 housing) That's just complete speculation but it may well be true. Stop stealing my thread anyway!

Breaking news: The jap crap infestation on and around my property was pretty much eradicated this afternoon, apart from mum's plastic bubble mobile (which I wish I could get rid of) and a handful of panels & other parts, it's all gone :)

I just priced a bearing kit from Bearing Wholesalers. It's just for the centre itself not the wheel bearings on the axles (I'll do them if they make noise but I will probably end up breaking axles etc so might not bother). Timken products, with the oil seal for $95, sounds okay. I'll probably grab that next week.

Mmmmm gave the housing its final coats and have started cleaning all the little parts up and putting them back together.

And I bought a pair of fine spline axles off MR5000 as well. Here's a comparison shot between Coarse spline (10 splines) and Fine spline (23 splines)
