Hi,

I was looking over the Shannons article on the UC/UD/UE (https://www.shannons...er-meant-to-be/ )

and noticed the air vent design is substantially different/better in GMH's UC interior model. Pic attached and vent circled in red. Anyone know if this design ever released, perhaps in factory AC or later Sunbird models ? I've only ever seen the comically bad spinny ones

Cheers,

Matt

I don't believe that that ever went into production.

Ooooh look at that fancy 80's style bonnet release, too!

But sorry, what's comically bad about the barrel vents?
Mine are shimmed up with plastic washers and have foam on the face that they pivot on. I drive my car a lot and they function just fine for me.

Back in the day we would just shove a fruit box straw down the side of the barrel to stiffen it up.

I used to get them spinning and let them go. They'd spin forever.

6000rpm at 70km/h. None of the engines available at the time that were to be fitted to this could have possibly managed 6000rpm! But assuming it was possible it'd have to be a Starfire or 2850 in 2nd.

Just the spinning at insane speeds until you refurb them as you've done ... it's comical :-)

Yeah, it does actually look like a Premier/Statesman vent on its side now that you mention it

Right. I was recalling the HJ premier from memory it's the same vent but mounted the other way.

I found one on ebay cheap and bought it so I'll report back once I've made some comparisons to the factory ones in the UC

Thanks for the tip!

Just following up on this in case anyone else cared.

The vents are indeed interchangeable between HJ/X/Z/WB Premier and the UC Torana. See the pics - original UC part is on the right.  The outer shroud is the same physical part just having different holes punched depending on whether the barrel or louvre style inner is fitted.

No idea why this never became a Torana option ... Perhaps there was no comparable part to upgrade the horizontal airbox vents but I am happy to have the Premier ones on the side vents - they seal much better and you can point them where you want them instead of fixed angle either up or down.

Cheers,

Matt

I pretty sure they're the same too but I don't have an LH/X Torana on hand to confirm, only a UC.

I'm also starting to wonder whether the earlier HQ Premium vents might make a suitable upgrade for the airbox barrel vents as they're a more elongated form factor.
