Hi Brains trust!

I have a 72 charger with the boat anchor 265 and 4 speed. Needless to say its not the most spritely performer and I am looking to convert to either a late model injected engine or maybe a 360/408 LA engine with a 5 speed.

Does anyone know of any particular issues with the late model conversions? I have seen a few at the Nats so presumably is doable. Not sure what sort of engine management and small parts are needed from the original donor vehicle. Ideally not looking to buy a whole car to do this.

I like my R154 boxes but wont know if one fits until the car comes apart. Anyone know what size 5 speeds have been fitted without cutting the tunnel?

Thanks in advance.

Seems a shame to change the driveline in a great car but understandable

what a about a BB 440 ?

I looked at an ex NZ Charger that had an engineered 440 in it. It was cheap but apocalyptically rusty so I passed.

My first feeling was to do a factory option engine such as a LA series 360 based combo but I really like the low maintenance big power a late model engine gives after my experience with my LS powered LJ.

There was a really cheap 6.4L Hemi on Gumtree or maybe Marketplace. Only a few days ago. Out of  Cherokee I think.

All of those modern Hemis have a lifter issue, but so do the LS's I guess. A cam change and remove the cylinder shutoff lifters will fix it. The 5.7 Hemi in my Ram, I have to be careful to use the right oil and filter or it will tick on startup.

You could go one better and find a Hellcat engine, those are weapons. Although even the 5.7L engines go well, a dead stock DS 1500 Ram with a 5.7L Hemi is as quick over the quarter and 0-100mph as an XY GT-HO or HT-HG GTS350, and it weighs about 2700kg. Finding a manual box that will take the engine and fit the Charger might be a bigger issue than fitting the engine.

They went with triple webers...

Bloke at local coffee and cars has the latest SRT v8 in a Chrysler coupe. Ugly but good.

The 360 is a good option but I believe they are getting harder to obtain, are you aware of the Chrysler forum hemi6pack.com plenty of knowledgeable people there who could help.

I reckon you'd buy a whole Jeep with 6.4 Hemi as a stat writeoff and grab everything you need. Places like this do harnesses:

Just put a hellcat red eye and a nag1 in a 68 charger. Mopar loom and ecu etc. Amazingly smooth running with shotgun throttle response and brutally powerful. Big job but fantastic result.

I'd love to see a picture of that Albert.

There are more than 30 6.4 litre SRT's for wrecking on Gumtree at the moment.

So if I go the whole car approach don you think there is any advantage of buying a jeep vs a 300 sedan?

I don't think it matters. Maybe ask the dudes that do the harnesses if it matters. I doubt you'll get a manual box with any of them.

There are lots of 300 SRT-8's wrecking as Laurie says, but how many out there are looking for parts? Given a regoed one with 100,000kM on it is about $25k-ish I can't see a wreck being worth more than $10k. I reckon you'll pay $7k for an engine with all sensors, harness and ECU. And who knows what else might be needed? Some of the donor car's bits like fuel pump, radiator etc might be useable. The rest you could sell as a job lot for not much and still be in front maybe? Possibly talk to the guys that seem to wreck them, like S-twins and see which one has more valuable parts on them.

That level of deconstruction makes it look like an easy job!

What trans is behind it?

Did you use the factory computer or something else?

So I ended up buying a complete running car…..

It was going to be a hassle having a non mobile wreck  and the wreckers are asking big prices for stuff. I would rather carefully dismantle one myself and can be sure everything works before I pull it apart.

Found a two owner 93,000k car with minor interior and body issues.

Geez it’s a lot of car for the money. Goes really hard, steers well and the big brakes are very impressive.

I think it might be too good to pull apart.

LOL... Who here hasn't fallen for that one (I still own a VQ Statesman that was bought for parts but was "too good" to murder)!

I would've thought the biggest buyers of those 300C's would be the various state's Highway Patrols, they are the only examples I think I've ever seen on the roads. I've been tempted to buy an ex-hwy one just for a hack myself.

I used to think the same every time a HJ-HZ Statesman or Premier was to come apart to donate the front half to a cab-chassis. Only ever bought rust free ones with good drivelines.

Rexy, there is a whole Holley Sniper intake setup for one of those engines on Foolbook in Sydney. Pretty cheap too.

Saw a 300C recently around Sydney in rough condition but driveable for under 4k.

Bloke I knew a few years back owned one.

Passenger headlight stopped working.

Was quoted best part of 2k to fix it.

Apparently there were a few other bits that need removing to get to it.

Cheers

Rob
