Harry has informed me of late, that it was in fact the V8 xu-1 series II, "BUT" i have heard him mention it by the name xu-2 from time to time, but if you ask him now he will tell you it was the xu-1 series II never the xu-2 ????????????

I can see why, many people will tell you that it was never formally called the XU-2 and he doesn't want to set himself up. He probably called it the XU-2 out of laziness as it is much easier to say.

There is an article in 'The History of the Torana' where the above XU-2 picture is taken, I will scan and post it when I get time. It shows what looks like an official typed announcement from GM-H dated June 30, 1972 annoucing the V8 Torana XU-1 will not be built and it is called just that, it is not once referred to as the XU-2.

No further info on the South West WA car as yet
Bit hard to track people down after 30 odd yrs
Spoke to a bloke today and he tells me he thinks it could have ended up in Perth
The plot thickens

I say Harry Code Named it the XU2 in its early days

That is only your guess.

I'll scan the article later but here is what it says:

Marc Mc Innes, GMH Public Affairs manager for NSW and QLD was there at the time and was involved in the project. Mc Innes says that XU-1 was the official GMH code for the triple carb 6 cylinder Torana engine. But XU-2 "had been assigned to the Bedford truck division. I rescued the paperwork - which hadn't gone very far - and had XU-2 re-assigned to LH."

The picture of the prototype above proves this quite clearly.

The XU-2 was an arbitrary number and destined to be used on a truck but Mc Innes made sure it didn't get to that stage.

By reading the article you can only assume that at the time they gave out the numbers the code XU-1 didn't have the impact it does today, it was just a catalogue number and the next vehicle in line for the next code number in the catalogue was a truck but Mc Innes thought it would be better suited on a Torana LH.

Yeah your not wrong Al -- something that seems so easy is actualy bloody hard
Just need this Lynn fella who was the last known owner, but tracking him down is proving to be a problem
Have caught up with a fair few old mates i havn't spoken to for years and beers have been organised :spoton:
The car was definatly an XU1 (Bathhurst??) and all i need is the numbers off an old rego paper and it can go on the list

You might find interesting that my brother Steve Russell while based in Canberra ( Airforce) in 1972 had his brand new XU1 converted by Daves Dyno Tune to a new crate 308. It was metalic blue in colour, they sent it down to Melbourne to H&M headers to make the full exhaust system. they also had bosche in Sydney convert the distributor to a dual rotor twin coil setup. I have a few pics of it at home which I will scan in and post up in the next couple of days. The only thing that I hated about the car was he had a Webasco vinal sun roof put in the car.
