I spoke to the owner again and yes it has the anti-sun glass (which has has apparently has an aftermarket tint placed over it as well ) he is sending me some pics of the car and I'll post them a.s.a.p. :spoton:

last time I saw it in the flesh was at summernats 5 or 6, he has owned it since 1986 and it is pampered :D :D :D
now if I can just stir him up enough to get him to bring it out of hiding :spoton: :spoton:

it runs a super t10 and a sailsbury rear end...........................

. The dead givaway as the whether the air was factory or dealer fitted (if a factory air setup is used) is a small bracket on the crossmember for a V8 with air.

Well, thanks for pointing that out, whats the bracket on the crossmember attached to on the engine? or does it hold some part of the AC?

As you pointed out, anitsun glass doesnt equal fact air, but no antisun glass would indicate no fact air.

Hi Guys.

I'm with REDA9X on this one. No A9Xs left the factory with fully integrated A/Cond. The proof would be the dealer delivery docket with options listed.

I was under the impression that the welded bracket you are talking about was part of the engine mount bracket bolted between the engine mount itself & the block, this assembly could be purchased as a new part. Other areas of concern are that the GM A6 compressor would foul the unique A9X radiator overflow bottle & the lack of a decent engine fan would make the A/Cond underperform on hot days. True factory-fitted LX V8s have a multi-blade engine fan with a viscous clutch & shroud & an auxiliary electric fan very similar to the lone unit fitted to all A9Xs. Even if you fitted a 2nd electric fan this would not supply enough airflow for both the A/C condenser & the radiator, without a good engine fan.

I've been in the car air cond game for 30 years & have fitted a large number of GM/Frigidaire/Harrison fully integrated systems to Holdens & Toranas & it is possible to fit them & make them look genuine.

There are different levels of dealer fitment also. There was a custom unit made by Air International (the co. that makes factory A/Cond for all Commodores) & this was sold as a genuine 'GM P & A' A/Cond & was commonly fitted by dealers to LX & UC Toranas. GM P & A stands for GM Parts & Accessories which was called Nasco prior to 1974. Dealers could also purchase any other unit e.g. Mark IV, Smiths, Unicla etc & fit these for the buyer, before delivery. Or as mentioned earlier, they could shop the car out to an independant specialist & have them supply & fit a system.

Dr Terry.

could you order an A9x before it was built, or GMH just built them and the public took what they could get? Could have being a special order. A friend had a one of HZ wagon, came with statesman bagdes out the factory. And it's a one of colour. If you have enough money, you can buy anything.

Yes, I thought about the fan issue too with this a9x with air, but thought surely they would have had to changed over the cooling system, the car would have overheated with just the added flow restriction of the condensor without even having the air on a hot day.

Just out of interest my old factory aircon LX V8 hatch didnt have the thermo fan. It was an auto and had the viscous fan, the fibreglass shroud and a three core radiator.

You couldn't option anything from the factory on the A9X.

If it had dealer fitted air, the cooloing system was revised at the dearship (or whoever the dealer got to fit the system). I have seen a few variations on how it was done.

And yes terry, the bracket was on the engine mount (solid part of), but it would still require the engine to be removed to fit that bracket, which I couldn't see a dealer doing on a new car for an item thats not required.

End of the day, it doesn't matter, no such thing as a factory air A9X. The baron would back me up on this one seeing he owns a black hatch with dealer air.

above is a pic of the only A9X to ever leave the factory with factory air. It is however a RACE SHELL specially put together for the road for WA HDT member Wayne Negus. Wayne and the production manager at the time hand built the car, it also had a T400 auto and a few other items. It's not a production car however, so it couldn't technically be called a factory A9X with factory air.

Years ago I had holden send me out a letter stating original build 1976 records from their micro fish which said Integral System (C60) ,
Which I gather is the only possible way to confirm is the vehicle had factory fitted Air conditioning ...
As for the for the a/c bracket support on the RHS engine mount bracket it is easyly removalible without taking the engine out...
As I have changed mine to HQ engine mount brackets to lower the engine to get better clearance between the the V8 booster and tappet cover .
Also there were 2 V8 A/C air compressor mounting bracket setups , the proto 1st type was pictured in the LH torana Service Manual ( PN M37458 )on page 12-128 , as the 2nd type released for them was pictured in the LH torana Parts Catalogue ( PN M37687 )on page 404...
I ve still got my factory a/c , I changed my compresser to a sanden and moded the a/c box on the firewall to get more clearance for the tappet cover...

IF thats an A9X, it can't be terribly original, what diff is he running? Anyone else notice the rear calipers in the wrong spot?

as for the smae bracket on the engine mount, yep, you could remove it easily with the engine in, fitting one from scratch is another story as there is nowhere to accomodate it, you'd need to get in there and drill, that would be fun with the engine still in. Yes if you could get the build sheet for the car, it would tell you what option it has. If you get the PSN (centre tag number) off this black hatch, I'll tell you if it had factory fitted air or not.

If thats an original A9X its missing heaps, no brake ducts on the front, wrong bolts on flairs and scoop, miss matched seats front and rear, small calipers on diff at at back? and it looks to have been resprayed recently. Why would you change a potentially very sort after car so much.

im in the process of tracking down a bloke who "apparently" has a black A9X hatch, history goes worked in mines at broken hill, car got a hard time repainted matt-black (eww) bloke still owns it and lives somewhere near me...
If i ever find it (slowly trackin it down) what would be the tell tale signs to look for? and does it have factory air lol J/k

The main reason I'm having trouble getting more pics is that the owner is sick of people telling him that some things are not "correct" about his A9X, its his car, if he wants to alter it from original that is his choice, I do know that the mods are tastfully done and can be returned to stock if he so desires, as he has all the "original" bits stashed away in the shed.

If you remember the original question was not about the condition of the car , it was about the colour and the A/C.

As far as I know the paint is original,(not resprayed, I will check), rear calipers,(I have know idea so I'll ask about that too), as for the PSN number I'll ask , but don't hold your breathe :D he is very protective of the car as I'm sure you can understand. I will aslo ask about the build sheet, anything else I need to ask??????????????????????????????????????????????????????
??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Oh yeh, the wheels in the pic are factory (the Boyd Factory that is :D :D :D )

The original question was how many black hatch A9X's came with factory air, so far we have to prove whether it is in fact an A9X at all. Maybe people are telling him important things are not correct? The pic you provided pointed out some od things that made peple ask questions, the fact that it may have been modified doesn't really come into it as most cars have been over the years. It's a good looking car don't get me wrong. The fact is over the years as you can imagine I have been approached by so many people saying they have an A9X, only to find they have a fake, it's very hard to try and tell someone, I'm really sorry but..... I don't see though why he needs to be shy about providing a PSN to me in a PM, if I really wanted to I could just check the records and work out from the 6 hatches made if any came with factory air (which I can already safely say they did not). I'm just trying to answer your question for you, so I hope you don't take any offence to what I have written.

TORUNYA, I think I know of the car you are talking about and it's it's the one I'm thinking of, it's long left Broken Hill and was not a factory A9X.

Yep, thats the one, it's not an A9X as such, it started life as a purple SS hatch owned by a certain grey haired fellow who made it into an A9X before the A9X was around.........

I will pursue him over the PSN and will PM it to you if I get it REDA9X, oh and I don't take offence to any of what has been said by anyone about the A9X in this thread, I am a :stirpot: and I thought I would get in first about the car having mods (the owner know what I think about that ,he's a very naughty boy in my opinion, upsetting the purists deliberately as he does :D )

One thing I'm not stirring about is that it is an A9X ! and a black hatch at that :D

My husband can kinda remember it when he was a kid, father in law knows more, might bail him up about it
Thanks again!
