..then thought

keep bloody BOTH hands on the wheel

AND don't temp fate ..by taking a vid BEFORE i reach destination safely/successfully ;)

absolutely a vid on way home laurie!

---------------

(and boo!

booster completely shot. being exchanged for a reco one.

not such a bad idea anyways)

all quiet on the western front, sadly!

car still at mechanics (wouldn't be if i had the money already to pay for all the work that's been done. but i don't, and am chipping away)

Has had sandblasted and fully reconditioned font calipers, ($175 plus labor. cheap as!)

old booster taken out and a reco booster put in, ($370 plus labor. again, cheap as!)

and all new flex brake hoses fitted,

and bled and sorted.

wonderfully, mech was very happy with state of rear drums. said they appear to brand new to him, as in were replaced sometime in past even.

so... i have brakes now!

------------

Now.. the things i have asked him to do also... (that i could do.. but he has it on a hoist, so.. am being SLACK hahaha)

drop tank and flush and fit new rubber purge section from canister, as was perished.

put in the new rear shocks i had already purchased,

and is fitting trimatic service kit too.

and go over whole car and double check pretty much everything.

-----------

so, all is going well and progressing, albeit slowly.

am being teased by having a pile of parts sitting here to fit on car as soon as i get back.

teased most by the gts mirrors! can't wait to put on.

Attached File  IMG_3423.JPG   77.34K   6 downloads

also shown,

8 Way Fuse Box  (as am mounting beside battery and running all my additional engine/fan etc wiring through)

https://www.ebay.com...872.m2749.l2649

and decided am adding side indicators to the car.

want to have as little visual footprint as poss,

so have "shaved" two of them, and are going to drill two rectangular holes and pop thru from rear. (as shown.)

was undecided which style to go with, and where to install.

am mounting beside rear of the front flares, on qtr panel

the  same design (but with chrome outer) would of gone somewhat nicely on side of front bumper, but would be too large/garish i decided.

also, although i liked the "arrow" design, (with all the unnecessary arm etc cut off)

but i thought would be a bit out of place with car style.

--------

also a new proper rotor, as one in car not fitting tight to dizzy "axel"? 100%

-------

and a panoramic (and ever so slightly curved) rear view mirror clip on.

--------

and, split conduit to run all my wiring in.

-------------------------------------

anyways, can't bloody wait to get car back, aargh!

am filthy not being able to go outside and start her up whenever i choose.

Sounds like it's coming along Mat, but I really hope you reconsider adding those cheap-looking clearance lights.

Firstly because they just look damn ugly, but also because they're clearance lights not blinkers, so I think you'll find they won't be bright enough during the day?

If you absolutely have to have them, maybe take a walk around a wrecking yard and find a pair of factory repeater lamps that you like the look of, but don't forget to either buy the mudguard as well or take note of the shape of the hole they mount in?

heya andrew, might be right on their brightness. am going to install a set of side indicators for safety's sake

but want them to work well obviously.  cheers for the heads up! will double check and decide.

as they are only 3.5cmx2cm and will be recessed i feel wont be anywhere near as noticeable/ugly as you suspect, but each to there own of course.

am trying to get head around getting my high beams working.

i THINK my steering column/coffee pot wiring i nabbed from an LH tory steering column...

so that may make thing difficult for a start.

(so i expect i have the correct "LX" DIMMER loom/wiring all the way to steering column harness CONNECTOR.. but not on the steering column harness/coffee pot section itself?? as the LH coffee pot loom would of thought "floor activated switch")

and i think andrew you said i only need 2 wires to run the dimmer.. but this diagram says 3???? i think.

anyways, i dont have the car with me and am hoping makes more sense when do,

AND have bought the dimmer indicator arm off ebay, which i haven't as yet.

will buy switch and ponder some more then.

Yeah they're two completely different systems between LH and LX.

LH (as with HQ and earlier models) had 3 wires going to a floor-mounted dip switch, which was heavy duty enough to power the headlights directly, so power was supplied to the dip switch from the headlight switch, then directed to either the high or low beams depending on the position of the dip switch.

LX is more complicated, the floor-mounted dip switch is replaced by a "latching" changeover relay under the bonnet, and the signal from the stalk-mounted dip switch that tells the relay to change state is simply a momentary earth signal.

So you're using an LH steering column, but remind me what wiring harness you have? I think it was LX, in which case, do you have one of these relays mounted near the driver's side headlight...

100_2427.jpg

...if that's there (I assume it is if your headlights work at all), you should only need to replace the stalk/switch in the coffee pot, feed the wires down through the column and plug 'em in to the harness?

cheers! yes, lx car wiring harness. and do have that relay mounted near the driver's side headlight

(and yes, lights/low are working)

but this section of wiring... (example photo NOT of mine, this is an ebay photo)

Attached File  indicater dimmer wiring (3).jpg   180.52K   6 downloads

..i took from an lh steering column. (as my car was missing this indicator/wiring stuff)

guess worried that as i stole this section from an LH tory it might not be right

(but the lower section that this example loom shown would connect to.. is all proper lx wiring)

------------guess i buy the dimmer... and run the black and white off it as shown..

.. but where i connect to lower section of harness is escaping me.

well, maybe not the WHITE, that i can see from this pic.

but the BLACK ??

That picture above is from an LX, you can see the microswitch at the base of the stalk...

indicater_dimmer_wiring_3a.jpg

If you buy an LX combo switch it should plug straight into the LX wiring harness without doing any modification, it's all in the one single plug.

You feed it down through the coffee pot, down through the plastic sleeve below that, and connect it to the wiring harness down next to the ignition switch (the switch itself, not the key).

Should be easy as...

gotcha, kind of. (typically me)

i can see where i feed the WHITE down to..(last position in the connector, seeemingly)

..but not the BLACK.(coming from the dimmer switch)

hard to tell in this pic

but two or three other wires seem to be black, (or dark blue?) darn it.

..soo, using this pic, i am not sure which of these is the BLACK wire from dimmer. (and hence where in the connector/terminal i place it)

maybe the dimmer black wire is one of the "ground"s in the pic?

or is it one of the black running to the connector. aaargh!

just to make it more complicated..

here's my confusion

Okay so you've ONLY bought the stalk and microswitch that I circled and not the whole assembly pictured?

There's my confusion, I assumed it would all come as one assembly.

Would the round plastic blinker switch part from an LH even have room to mount that microswitch from the LX? I've never tried to mix'n'match, I assumed the connector would have more pins on the LX model?

Oh P.S. Yes the extra black wire is just an earth, if you look at the LX wiring diagram it clearly shows it earthed on one side of the switch (No. 11)...

gosh i hope it CAN mount to an LH assembly! lol

wouldn't... surprise me if an extra "unexpected" outlay of cash is ahead of me.. again DOH!

will see.

hopefully i dont have to by an lx mechanism.

________

and black is an earth. gotcha, thank you andrew!

It's not that hard to wire the wiper switch from the UC combo switch, I did one many years ago and if I remember it was just a case of extending a few wires down to where the LX wiper switch was removed, I did this on a mate's car and I think we added a rotary intermittent / dwell controller where the original switch was.

But you need the UC coffee pot and ignition barrel as well because the hole in the side was in the wrong spot, I recall we opened it out to suit with a die grinder but then the stalk didn't fully cover the enlarged slot and it looked damned ugly so we ended up changing the whole coffee pot.

You also have the option to replace the factory headlight switch with the combo switch from a VL Commodore too...

IVL7510NBP.jpg

...apparently it's a direct bolt-in replacement for the UC/VB/VC/VH/VK style wiper switch but obviously different wiring. Note that I've never actually done this style but we looked at it as an option and went for the wiper switch instead.

Anyway...

Looking at you photos above, I'd say the LX stalk will fit the LH blinker switch as it has that extra bracket that puts it off to the side, but I can't remember if that means the slot in the coffee pot moved as well?

I'll have a look in the parts catalog and see if the part numbers changed... hang on a minute...

Well that's weird, the coffee pot (or "HOUSING - Steering column") is listed in the LH catalog but it's missing from the LX catalog? However both catalogs have the same superseded part number (9945882) written in pen so I would say they're the same?

What's also strange is that there's no mention of trim colour, I'm sure these were painted different colours depending on the trim, or were they all black?

Also both LH and LX appear to use the same part number (9929792) for the blinker switch assembly.

So I'd guess that it should still all fit together, I think you'll be right.

that's seems like good news! (... cus an lx mech and stalk are $250 on ebay!, compared to only $100 for an LH)

and will leave doing UC or comm switch for another day.

like the sound of the VL comm one, as a uc setup is not simple from what you and others have found. (have just been reading up on)

cheers again andrew!

I don't remember it being difficult to convert the wiper switch, but it was probably 20+ years ago so maybe my memory is not as good as I remember!

Thinking more about the VL headlight switch, the only thing you would have to consider is that the Commodore had a separate wheel/knob for dimming the dash lights so you would lose that ability if replacing the Torana headlight switch.

Anyway, quit spending money on accessories and get the damn thing on the road first (still waiting for the road test video)! :D

imagine will do a conversion one day,

and agree.. first getting it on the darn road should be my main aim. (am rewiring using the fuse box i bought though, asap.)

having withdrawals as is, even to the point of contacting mechanic and asked if i could just "pop over and mount the gts mirrors"!

not the standard request, i suspect lol

road test vid.. maybe next wednesday, maybe the wednersday after!

Slow going (who'da thunk it!?) ..but getting there.

Didn't get the brakes finished, despite positive thoughts need to replace the rear brake cylinders (left has seized)

Got the exhaust realligned, as was hitting the frame in about 4 places

Got the new trans mount installed

and a few tinkerings can't think of right now.

Still need to replace the engine mounts, service trans, MAY need to replace tailshaft/trans flange (or was that torque converter was full?? or something??)

and still need to work out what the frOcks going on with the shifter ("throw")

did i put on/buy the wrong (small) trans "lever" piece??? Aargh!

---------------

Anyways, is HOME for a month while i save up some pennies, and do some tinkering  myself

Yay!!

------------------

was glad (to THINK??) that i heard the trans change gear nicely in the vid

(wasn't bloody sure to be honest. noisy car and new to trimatics. and just paranoid)

bloody nice to have the GTS mirrors finally, looked bare without them.

were one of the first things i had on my wish list to buy.. so long ago.

finally decided on what style and placement of the side indicators i wanted for my car.

only took 4 sets to settle on the design lol
