Was,nt XW-7 Export ?

Posted Image

Did,nt the article "160MPH SUPER CARS SOON" first appear in The Sun Herald on Sunday the 25th of June ?

Posted Image

A little food for thought......................

In the following month of July, Holden only completed 8 XU-1,s bringing their total up to 600.

Just a little food for thought.................

Hi Bruce,
Dunno how accurate it is but these repro posters have the date
25 June 1972 on them.

G/Day Allan
From August 1972 Holden built 805-806 LJ XU-1,s. Of these cars 105 were earmarked for export (000 X). Leaving 700 still in Australia. The so called Bathurst run required a minimum of 700 cars be built.

200 2/2V Sprintmasters
200 4/4V Track
300 5/5V Cam, Springs, Flywheel, 3.55 diff ratio

Posted Image

The rules do state the cars must be sold in Australia and the cancelled XW-7 Export programme may of had something to do with it also. I suppose what im trying to ask is weather or not a exported LJ XU-1 built after August qualifies as a Bathurst XU-1 torana. Oddly enough Holden only exported 2 LJ XU-1,s in 1973. Up until the 1973 Bathurst run which began on the 1st of July, Holden built 502 LJ XU-1,s which only 2 were earmarked for export. Leaving 500 XU-1,s still in Australia. This was the number required under the new Group C rules for eligibility.

Actually XU-2 was used by a Bedford truck..The pics of the SLR5000 with XU2 stickers was done by Zmood and the styling guys for presentation to Bagshaw and senior execs.
R

If you get hold of a feb 74 LH parts book it will have XU2 stickers in it.

Hi FLY
Have just read this one from start to finish (eyes are sore)
Getting back to the original question you say the car was sold in WA

Not sure how many SMP LJ'S were sold over here but there was one getting around in Albany for years
The number plate you quote is a state plate -- ie sold in the city as anything sold from the country had shire or town plates

It had at least three owners that i can remember and in 1982 it belonged to a fella by the name of Steve, whom i knew well as i had a GTR at that stage as well
The SMP was professed to be a "Bathurst" but weather this was true or not i wouldn't have a clue

It was sold to another bloke who's name escapes me now (just need a bit of time) who was also a local

What history do you have? as you say you need the first 13 years
The last i realy heard of it was it getting the arse thashed off it out in Jerramungup and that would have been in '83
I dont believe it ever came back Albany way but i may be wrong

Have just remembered the fella before him but name again escapes me (i can see the face )
I should know as i dated his sister -- ha ha
From memory he had it for a fair while
Hope i can be of help -- will chase up the two others
D

G/Day D (Swarbs)
According to the first known owner (Glenn) he purchased the car around 1986. It was purchased by Glenn from a major Perth newspaper. Glenn was from Hamilton Hill. It was painted white at the time and still retained its original number plates XBX-414. According to the VIN Bible it was originally sold through dealer 158 which im pretty sure was one of the Perth dealerships. It was sold in January of 1973 and first registered on the 15th. From the 15th of January 1973 to 1986 its history is unknown to date.

Glenn sold the car around 1988 to a chap by the name of Ben. Ben was from Tom Price. It remained in WA until 1994 until Ben got transferred to Sydney. In 1994 Ben sold the car to a chap by the name of Bob. Bob owned the car up until January 2003. This was when i purchased it......................

Your help would be muchly appreciated

Bruce.

Gday Bruce, dunno if this helps or not but about 4 to 6 years ago there was
a SMP XU1 featured on Cruizin & pretty sure the bloke reckoned it was a 72
Bathurst. Anyway I had spare cash then (those days are gone now) & was
looking for another so I had a wanted add in the paper & this bloke called.
He confirmed it was the same car on Cruizin but had unfortunately now
thrown a leg out of bed & he wanted about 24K for it. So I left it at that,
mighten mean anything but I'll see if I've got the details still written down
somewhere.
Also I havnt seen a SMP displayed at any of the local car shows & usually
go to most & check out the Torries.

Cheers Jono

Have made a couple of phone calls and caught up with a couple of old mates from yeeaars ago (so this has been a bonus for me)

The story i have on the Albany car starts back with a bloke called Kitson -- i will try to find out more about
He sold it to Goofy Hayman (the one i couldn't remember) Late 70's
It then went to Geary and the car was fitted up with an ex speedway motor with webbers on it
It was then sold to a bloke by the name of Ware (the one with the sister) apparently a swap for a fraud Escort and cash
He sold it to a girl Shelly (someone?) and it went out of town for a while
A bloke by the name of Towell bought it and who by coincidence used to live over the back fence of my place when i was growing up
He done a pretty compehensive rebuild on it (not forgetting you could still buy stuff off the shelf them days) and brought it back to original
It then went to a bloke by the name of Lynn and apparently was written off in the early 90's
How bad or whatever i dont know yet

Here the story endeth

According to good sources the car was an original Bathurst

I have another mate down there that knows this Lynn fells well so i will track him down and get the full story

So by the rego papers you have there FLY it sounds like this isn't your car
Stay tuned
D

Have got hold of the Towell bloke and had a good long catch up ( me old mate flannell)
He didn't have much more to add - but he did hear rumour the car was written off as well
He is going to chase up some old rego papers if he can find them and he also has an old photo
that his wife is going to hopefully scan and send
Still can't get hold of Mr lynn who is the last known owner -- just need one bloke to pick up his phone
