Nice to see your car with some very bright paint, def go with the black tailights and if your not sure about the blackouts (sills doorframes ect) look though some old torana books to see what you think or try photo shopping them on.

Well done on the paint and panel! Nothing beats the satisfaction of doing it yourself!
I think you know that I have had a few yellow Torries, the last being a genuine SLR that I painted myself in Chrome Yellow. That was my first paint job.
I have done about 10 more since then. My most recent 2 (this year) were full bare metal jobs.
I have watched DVD's, asked questions on painters forums, even spoken personally to local painters and beaters.
The secret to a single stage arcylic paint job is to apply more paint, and wet sand with some fine, finer, and finest paper. Then buff.
Clear coat on a single stage paint is a waste of money, and won't make it any shinier. Spend extra bux on more colour, so you can wet sand it safely without cutting through to primer.
Using clear when you don't "have to", builds up your paint thickness, and makes it MUCH easier to chip when a spanner slips, or on the road when a rock flies up.
Apparently old-school painters call the very last coat of colour a "piss coat". Where it is about 90% thinners. It is supposed to blend the acrylic paint and give it a super smooth and high gloss finish. Easier to wet sand and buff....
Brand and type of thinners also has a big impact on acrylic paint. Cheap "general purpose" thinner will dull off your colour as it comes off the gun.
I ALWAYS use PPG paint and accessories. More expensive, better results.
If you were local to me I'd be MORE than happy to come and help you. I just LOVE chrome yellow Torries!!!
Again.... looking good! Well done.

thanks for the advice with the clear. my train of thought with the clear was that it would 'protect' the paint better and that if chipped it would chip through the clear and hopefully not the colour. i have bought 6L of colour to do the whole thing and so far i reckon ive used maybe 2 and half... i beleive there is enough paint on the shell to start rubbing and buffing without any dramas of going through. i think i ended up laying down around 8 coats? which is a fair bit i thought.
after experiencing what i have now, my next spray job will most likely be a bare metal job. (but hopefully thats not for a while!)
cheers

and im really happy with the results. Far less paint wastage and it actually works properly. took a few coats to set it up right and in the process i got a few runs but they rubbed out and it came up really nice.
Engine bay is half bare metal with a few areas needing cleaning up. 2 weeks until exams so should give me some time to get right into it!
cheers
