Project is looking good mate.....POR have complete systems for rust prevention and prep. Very good products....try" Metal Ready", which conditions the surface with a zinc phosphate coating, and leaves the surface ideal for topcoat adhesion, also try "Marine Clean" prior to this step, it is an excellent degreaser/cleaner, it will emulsify/dissolve all oils... :spoton: Its hard to say what, if any, problem you had doing your engine bay....What product did you use??

P51 i used the exact same "system" but from a different brand. It was a KBS product. I thought id give it a go. Had no issues with the cleaner, and the paint itself is great, just the 'metal ready' step was where it turned to the shitter... I might try the POR stuff.

with most rust kill stuff, if there is no actual rust present and your just prepping good, bare metal you are meant to put it on then wipe it off before it dries with a rag soaked in metho, then paint over it as soon as you can. I know the stuff I used turned any surface rust blueish green

yeah... i don't know then... i followed what it said on the bottle. it said to put it on keep it wet for 10minutes or so then wash thoroughly with water. these instructions were the same for 'etching' or converting surface rust...

EDIT: but even the light rust that was under the brake booster is now turned rust colour... looking worse off then after i wire wheeled it

The washing with water is probably what caused al your dramas. Bare metal +water = surface rust, very very easily.

That gold/bronze colour is the protective etch coating.
Some go this colour, some go blue/green, some go black etc, depends on the acid use.

well im off from uni and back from my week long bender at Hotham where there was no snow. went out today for half the day done some rubbing back of things and then got into the bay.
first approach was to use Ranex Rustbuster and wipe off with a damp rag (as per instructions). this turned it to a bluey/whitey colour in which i still wasn't convinced was a nicely clean etched surface. then i used the same acid and instead of wiping of with water i used Prepsol to wipe the acid off and then a clean rag to wipe the prepsol off. Seemed to give a very clean looking surface (not bluey and discoloured). Ran out of time to etch primer it so hopefully no surface rust appears over night... :<_<:

Cheers

tears right now.... guys i havent touched the torry since i last visited this site 2 months ago.... i've been flat stick with 21st's every week end plus 3rd year uni in automotive eng so getting f'n hectic. but some good news have come from that in that i now have a 12 month student co-operative position with holden working in the manufacturing sector with machining actually earning real money. the plan is to still have the torry done by the end of this year, and now that the weather is better i can get back out there and start spraying again! don't worry i haven't lost the passion.

hang tight fellas

Todays short efforts were prepping three doors and getting two of them in primer. pretty happy as i was only out there for 4 or so hours. doors will need another round of primer though as I've noticed a few spots that require more work.

Cheers
