OK..The final washup..
Nissan diff housing 1338mm
LH diff housing 1320mm
Thats 9mm each side longer..
BUT!
After looking real hard..I installed an axle into their final resting places..and guess what??
The bolt up face from edge of flange for the Nissan is 53mm
The LH buf is 57mm....it sits out 4mm further than the Nissan
You can actually see in the pics the difference in axle hanging out past the bearing on the LH.

Final washup?...The Nissan B/W diff is 5 mm wider on each side...I can live with that!..get a ruler and look at 5 mm..The centres are even in the same place. End of argument.

So spell it out for the thicker ones here

Go and buy a Pintara diff
Then what axles do we use ?
Obviously we need a new centre too cause the axles on the Pintara are 25 spline and we want at least 28
Would we be better off buying the Skyline diff to get 28 spline to start with ?

Then get diff guru to cut off and remount Torana mounts

Then what ?

just curious Rory, do you have a rear rotor off a pintara sitting around?
how thick is it on the BUF?
and how thick is a torana drum?

For Dummies Inc.
Skyline R31 diff with handbrake cables. They will bolt to LH ones with a single pull bracket made up under the car.. Comes with big 28 spline axles. I fitted a full spool.
Get the LH brackets cut off and welded on
Redrill the rear discs and axles to whatever pattern you want..I am doing HQ/Chev.
Now go racing.

Good point!!..The Nissan is bolt to the face of the axles as it is rear discs...The Torana has a drum slip over the bolts so that puts its BUF out even further again!!..Anyone got a drum laying around they can run out and measure the thickness of the face that slips over the axle studs? I would reckon 3mm. Now we are really humming..its down to nearly nothing in difference! :spoton: I only have the Skyline diff. I have 2 new rear rotors in the shed..what do you want to know?...Hang on..it just twigged..The Nissan rortors slip over the top as well...I will go out and look.

Forget that last bit... The Nissan rotors are 6mm thick...the Torana ones are 3mm.. so we gain 3mm each side. There is heaps of meat on the Nissan rotors BUF so if you wanted to get real picky you could get 2/3mm faced off them without any dramas...I am not going to worry about it...Its still 8mm wider each side which is nothing.

so the wheels sit another 6mm out each side when the discs are put onto the diff?
I was just asking because the discs on the back of my LH are 13mm thick on the BUF, easy to loose a few mm there

A9X, but I am looking at getting rid of the 10 bolt to make way for a 9 inch or BW just to give me some better ratio options and save me from having to mod teh floorpan to get some decent upper control arms in there

Uppers are the same on all the models
Its just the dangle angle thats different
So good arms shouldn't be a problem no matter what diff you use

the problem is that my floor doesnt have the proper mounts to suit the angle of the A9X diff, it would be easier to sell my diff and buy a 9 inch with the ratio that I want than it would be to modify my floor and try to find the right diff gears for the 10 bolt

ive seen a few "dog-legged" top arms and personally dont think they would operate real well.

the sailsbury also seems to be taking up a lot of room under the car, more than I would be expecting with a 9 inch or BW

SO do we know the total width of the Lh-LX diff with drums fitted. I measured mine very quickly with the wheels on and it was 1440mm. I'll re measure it tomorrow with the wheels off and straight edges. What's the A9X 10 bolt width?

I will measure up mine some time tomorrow and let you know.

i really dont like the upper arms at all, and the angles must be causing some massive binding.
anyone know someone with a A9X less a diff? or building a replica A9X race car?
