Matts got it.

When you lower the car to the point you are talking you start to encounter issues like bump steer etc.

Look at Litre8.

Howard now uses it as a dedicated track car, and its not really low at all.

I think you are confusing your ideas.

Go-karts dont have suspension, F1 cars are a purpose built+designed racing car, there is no way in hell you can compare an F1 cars properties to that of a torana, or any road car for that matter.

And when did you last see an F1 car trying to negotiate a surburban back street complete with pot holes, uneven corners and speedbumps.

If you can get the sill panels of a torana only 100mm off the tar that would be a pretty low ride! Im thinking that challenge is to get everything under tucked up really well like exhaust and whatever else

By that i was talking about centre of gravity being low and NOT being like a boat. I know it will be stiff to ride in and uncomfortable but i dont think i will lose too much handleing

Look at these cars, some of the best handling cars in the world!

These would all be 100% legal on our roads! (lowest point is probably 100mm)

No, Lower it about 2" and it will handle better than standard... Then spend money on shocks, sway bars, new bushes etc etc...

go throw some money at koni or bilstein and get some decent shocks, springs etc etc.

Then it will handle better.

Its not about how low the car is that makes it handle, no body roll is not always a good thing. Its about how the suspension reacts through the corner, how it rebounds after the corner, how controllable it is etc etc. Simply lowering a cars COG, especially until its riding so firm that it begins to smash the car to pieces, will not help te handling as much as a decent shock/spring/swaybar combo will.

People like Howard (Litre8) Greg (82911) and a bunch of the "older" (i use that word nicely... trust me :P ) will be able to explain it all heaps better then matt and I can, but it seems you have your heart set on having a commodore themed torana.... go for it..

A correctly modified stock ride height Torana will out handle an incorrectly modified Torana with 100mm ground clearance.

The job for today was to fit my new exhaust. I wanted to tuck it up real nice coz the idea of crushing my exhaust on the first speed hump didnt really appeal to me. i decided to modify my crosmember and this is what i did.

just a quick cut and weld in a new piece

I think the 100mm rule is obviously the lowest you can go sensibly on the street, maybe even a little too low for the street.

Lowering a car is more about its look than handling, as said before a proper set up car will handle very well even at almost standard height.

last i measured my car it was at about 125mm and I was pretty happy with its height but that was without the exhaust in.
and last time it was on the road the back was up too high because of spring issues and it handled better than the gts except under brakes.

Get adjustable shocks...

you can dump it on its arse...
get pulled over
cop a canary
jack it back up
rid the canary
dump it again...

or
you can dump on its arse...
decide it drives like shit
and jack it back up to a nice compromise

win win situation.

P.S sorry if this has already been mentioned. I skimmed over the post

I'm sure there are others.

I think you're talking about coilovers? Adjustable shocks just change the damping rates, no effect on ride height. Adjustable height suspension generally requires custom work on a Torana.

edit: Although back in the day air shocks were very popular and could raise the car quite a bit. Didn't do a lot for the handling though and never seen any on the front end.

Yes I did mean coilovers.

I confused them with my Koni's

You can get PolyAirbags in VU utes and stuff. Its an airbag inside the spring that you can fill with air to stiffen up rear springs... Not sure if they raise or lower a car though... More a stiffness thing for load carrying... But seeing Torana rear and commodore rear springs are similar, you could look into it

How low can you go in a LH with springs before having to look at getting new shocks?

As far as rear shocks go not very far, because the shocks are used to keep the springs captive. It only needs to be lowered a bit before the springs become loose at full suspension droop, especially as most lowered springs tend to be stiffer and a lot shorter in extended height/length. By the time you get the car down to 100mm off the deck you'll be wanting shocks more than 100mm shorter than factory. Front shocks nowhere near as bad, the spring and shock doesn't travel as far as the wheel due to being halfway along the control arm so you can get away with the factory length shock for most springs.

edit: all that only takes into account length, if you're changing spring rates etc you'll want a set of shocks that can keep up
