How can anyone tell from that sketch what sort of engine it is. I'm Confused.
because holden never made a V6.so it is a v8 or a DOHC 4 like what was metioned above but i belive it to be an 8.

It looks like a reworksd Chevrolet Monza to me.
The UF coupe has heavy overtones of the Renault Alpina I think.

Actually, I suspect that the hatchback version of the 1971 Chevy Vega was the inspiration for the LX hatchback.
Except for the flow through ventilation slots in the Vega's hatch, I doubt if you could tell the difference between it and a LX/UC hatch.

Dead give away that it is what?the first dead giveaway is the exhaust manifold.....
I think you can only say what it isn't. Looks like the exhaust manifold is a collector for 4 valves.......so its not a v6 or a straight six or a v12 etc.
Yes could be a v8, could be a cross flow straight four........doesnt look much different to the manifold on the sunbudgie. The presence of the back seat passenger suggests a family/responsible type of vehicle for the impending oil crisis of the time.......another leaning towards the four(okay who really cares)......cant imagine them putting pictures of passengers in the back of an a9x.

oh sorry I forgot that responsible people dont drive V8's.Dead give away that it is what?the first dead giveaway is the exhaust manifold.....

the presence of the backseat passenger would be more to show off the fact that it is a 4 door hatch with space for adults in the back (seeing that its a V8 they are probably on their way to get pissed and do burnouts in some up tight pricks driveway, then drive home drunk).
still looks like a V8 to me

I'd like to see a 4cyl torana pull around 4 adults comfortably. The presence of the back seat passenger suggests a family/responsible type of vehicle for the impending oil crisis of the time.......another leaning towards the four
Also these pics would have been developed in the mid 70's, due to the extensive amount of design required to create a car. A car is not designed and created it a year.
No doubt the first images of the UC would have had a V8 in the engine bay. The decision not to have V8's in UC's was probably made at the last minute (mid 77) as the petrol crisis was really starting to grip and the new commodore was probably coming along faster than expected.

They did sell the four with four doors..........so I think they had that in mind.I'd like to see a 4cyl torana pull around 4 adults comfortably.
Perhaps they also had in mind moving to a high tec 2L four DOHC like available in cars such as the alpha of the time.......who knows about the dreams of the designers, cant imagine they thought they were going to win Bathurst with a five door model. I think it is most likely a v8 too, however, one needs to keep an open mind.

Regarding the picture, is it possible the picture is not meant to be representative of anything in particlar? Maybe it was a new design holden were working on?
EDIT - Gee whiz, see what happens when I start a reply and the phone rings. Hit the submit button ten minutes later only to find a similar post has beaten me to it.......

Not really my cup of tea.... but interesting non-the-less.
(thanks again Buckle for all the pics)

ps- note on this clay model, there is a card cut out on the side not seen,
and an LX front end with some sort of angled nose cone. It is not the same
pic as the one with the UC front end IMO.

You should be able to colour it a little easier.
(fixed shade differences in door and windscreen too.)
