So if you stumbled across a decent 308/supra set-up... You wouldnt be swayed? Its a Torana after all! :spoton:

It should be a fun little machine! And being dutch you should be able to do things on the cheap! :tease:

Look if I keep this car for a long time, it will at least cop a turbo, maybe a V8... (in addition to the turbo, not instead of it lol). But I think it will be a lot of fun with a singing six and a dogleg 3spd :P

Re: being a tightarse. I have spent under $8,000 on Toranas (not including fuel, rego, insurance), and I've already got half the shit I need for this car as well! But this will have a bit more of a budget than the other one I think.

Probably just a welded rollbar (four point) with a harness bar. Not sure yet though

droptech make drop stubs that suit torana calipers, but not cheap (about 700 a set)

Seems like you should have a bit of fun with it!

You need to find a place that uses a shitload of paint and buys in bulk for things, I could get a shitload of omega yellow or Clark forklift green (we use tonnes at work)but they arent the greatest colours and its industrial 2pack.

Good luck with it Heath, good to see someone else getting into racing.
But the price !!!!!!

I wonder where my old Torana is now, it looks like the sell price was a bargain compared to this...

That will be a load of fun dude.

I dont think its that expensive i have been considering buying another decent one but they just arent around.

Personally i wouldnt have it road registered and invest the money saved on a car trailer, saves a lot of hassle with legal issues and its a lot less hassle if you crash. I also wouldnt use a torana because of how rare they are getting but thats just me.

But whatever you do if you get it out on the track it will be awesome fun no doubt about that. You should have a look at the rules to do with what classes you will be able to run it in before you start modifying things. In case you want to get competitive in the future doing sprints and hillclimbs and stuff.

Good luck mate!

Sounds like a good plan mate,

You will definately be wanting a hydraulic handbrake if you're gonna drift with it. They are legal as long as you still have a functional cable park brake, so it's a piece of cake with LH/LX's. Just leave the original intact and bolt the new one in where they normally go, then run some new fluid lines.

Well a lot of guys do it on the R31s I remember, and if I run the R31 discs that'll be too easy. But yeah... interesting points about keeping the foot brake too! We'll see...

benno, read the ad. No I didn't inspect it but he said he photographed all the rust he saw was there, after pulling the car apart, you don't need to pull a car apart to look inside the f*cking boot! Basically I believe he was F.O.S. but I'm over it. It's on my property now so whatever I have to deal with it.

I think it's a fembit of a job to fix - each to their own.

Classes don't really matter, it's a fun car not a money-winning car. Class shit doesn't matter, it won't have a full cage or full slicks so who cares, it will be done on a case-by-case basis. I've done the kinds of racing I wanna do - it's all cool

Meh, that rust is behind the channel that the shock absorber sits in in the wheel arch (take a wheel off and you will see what I'm talking about). Shouldn't be too hard to fix, although working in the boot it the pits, it ain't that bad.

Very cool project, this should be lots of fun.

Just one thing to consider regarding registering it or not - one big plus for having it registered, means you can enter events such as Springnats where current rego is a requirement - then you can compete in their motorkhana courses, go-to-whoa, burnouts, whatever... also skidpan days such as what our car club run every year, require rego too....

If you don't register it, you'll save $600 a year there, but also limit yourself to what events you can attend, plus then you need to maintain a tow vehicle and trailer as well. And personally, I don't think it's worth towing unless you have a good tow-car and trailer setup - I've seen too many scary incidents from bad setups.

All depends how serious you get, and how reliable the car is.

Anyway, good luck, and keep the progress photos coming.

I wouldn't even consider having it unregistered, or unregisterable. It will be a road car, just like 'TORRY', but unlike TORRY, this ones steering wheel and brakes will actually get used :)

i dont think r31 discs are that big??? i was lookin at the diff i have and they look smaller than the front torry ones.. or im blind. some people dont look real hard man i bought a torry once it looked sweet in the garage and ok outside, but i gave it a wash and the lumps i saw all over it were rediculous. he probably didnt look that hard. a racecar sounds like the gun, thats wat im thinkin for the mini later, adjustable arms and shocks and replaeceable carb needles are easy on a mini though! i reckon u should do it green man u know u want to.

Commodore rears are 285mm (from memory), R31 are around 260mm diameter. Rear brakes don't do nearly as much work though, Rory ran them on his race car perfectly well

Hmmm, has anyone got the measurement that I would need to clear a wheel? like from the centre of the axle to the outside of the caliper on an R31 rear disc? Or if anything sticks past the caliper - to do with lines, handbrake linkage/cable or anything?

Cheers

If I remember I'll measure it for you next time I have a wheel off. HQ offset 14x7" wheels fit on mine easy at any rate. The handbrake lever is the only thing that sticks past the caliper but its too far inboard to foul on a wheel.

Have a look at rorys multiple posts anytime someone says "diff"
He posts the same pic of his diff on the dfloor with cables attached etc
So you can see where the caliper sits in relation to the bolt up face

Commodore rears are 280 (VB-VS) and yes Pintara/Skyline are 260mm
Torana front are 256

Okay well until this weekend I hadn't really done anything with this, but I pulled my finger out, don't know how dedicated I will be yet... motivation is good at the moment but cash flow is woeful so once I've done all the cheap things like painting I don't know what i'm gonna do! haha

Temporary garage LOL this is what it looked like on Friday

Had a spare pair of front brush panels so I bare metalled them and gave them a squirt of primer. These, along with most of the other non colour-coded parts of the car, will be metallic silver

Not a bad set of doortrims hey? Not sure what the fate of these will be yet... probably won't put anything on the back doors

Probably looks like I'm working in an absolute shithole but it's actually not too bad, just that the ground gets a bit soggy where I'm standing. Nice to be out of the sun in this intense weather

Ahh well I shouldn't pissfart around when the weather is good and I can afford the time

Just gave the other side a squirt of primer as well, but I need to do a few touchups where I didn't take enough care with the prep work
