Well it's been a while but I thought I'd do a tiny update. Nothing major has happened due to other cars being more needy : )

First thing I had to do before stripping the ute down was to get the hole in the bonnet sorted out as it looked like someone cut the existing hole out with a sharpened hammer.
After getting any of the bits of metal that were too close to the scoop ground away, I used 50mm masking tape to get a more accurate hole marked out. This shape was then transferred onto cardboard so it can be used as a template for when I redo the hole. Also, both bonnets are getting flat sheeted underneath, so I can use the same template to put the hole in the under side sheet too. The hole in the underside will have to be a bit longer at the back to allow for the bonnet coming forward as the hinges raise.

The butterfly linkage also needed to be sorted out and fitted so the hole could go around it.

The butterfly rod is now bolted through the carby linkage where the accelerator cable used to mount. I'm not happy with the cable being in front of the motor so it will come in from the back of the motor and attach to the top of the carby linkage instead. It will look a lot cleaner. This pic just shows the butterfly linkage, the accelerator cable is still in it's original position.

This is how the scoop sits with the bonnet fully closed. Personally I'd like to bury this scoop, as 1986 is long gone : ) It's not my car though so I'll just shut the hell up! hahaha, Sorry Pete : )

The next fun job was stripping the panels off and stripping the paint off the door jams and inner doors. The cowl vent and top of the firewall also got taken back to metal, as did the entire A pillars.

A few little bits of rust but nothing to get too worried about.

The plenum seems pretty clean inside. Looks better on the outside now too.

The inside of one of the doors got stripped as well. What a crap job that was!!!!

There is only a very small amount of rust in the inside of the door.

Well that doesn't look too much but it took care of today.

From Wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia....en_VB_Commodore

100 kilometres per hour (62 mph) Holden VB Commodore crash test. This test was conducted on 9 June 1992 by theRoads and Traffic Authority(RTA) as part of a test series to commission the Crashlab test facility inRoseville, New South Wales, Australia. The test was of the facility's drive system, not the actual car which had thetail shaftremoved, 300 kilograms (660 lb) of sandballastplaced in the footwells andbootand a 75 kilograms (170 lb) ballast dummy placed on the rear seat. This was supposed to represent a worst case scenario.

The Tonner's coming along nicely Dirtbag.

Wow you sure get a lot done in a day. Also i am a bit relieved that the rust is not much worse having spent the last 5 years in the weather in the back yard.
And i like the scoop.Posted Image So now i will go cry into a rum.

Ahh this project brings back memories of my old HQ one tonner, though your's doesn't have any where near as much rust as mine did. Looks like it's in good hands though & i'm looking forward to seeing how it turns out Posted Image

I think if you're going to have a bug catcher of some sort it needs to have a big whirring air pump like device under it : ) hahaha.

Well yesterday I primed up all the areas that were bare metalled the day before.

Posted Image

That's the shell all done now, as I'm making a flat firewall for it so stripping this one back is pointless : )

get crackin need to see this thing looking sweet. how does it go with legalities with the bonnet scoop. does it meet requirments like no higher than half a tampon or something. or is it going to be registred as a classic over 30 yrs old. not 100% about rulings but am keen to know as id love a scoop on my tonner.

Hiya. In Queensland at least any part of the engine sticking out of the bonnet is illegal, no matter how high or shiny it is. The only cars that get away with it are hot rods (pre 1948) trans ams, mustangs etc with shaker scoops. There is no way in the regulations that would let a scoop like this be legal. Another reason is the leading edge flares up, where it would have to flare down to give a rounded front. I guess you just take your chances.

Project is dead. It's been sitting in the way for 6 months with no funds being put towards it so I've kicked it out of the shed. I need room for projects that actually want to get done.

Pity. Could have been a nice unit!
