The 150 list of engine numbers were collected from engines at the Melbourne engine plant, from what information has recently come to light see "Torana Tough" book.

It was a list of engines that were to be fitted to XU-1's and to show Cams that the componets were available to assemble the last batch of XU-1's, however the start of production upgrades rolled off the end of the line and several XU-1 had already been built and shipped off to different states before the requirement of a engine list was made.

Due to production delays and the need to have upgraded models ready for the first round of the Manufactures Championship in Adelaide and the bulk of these XU-1 had not been built therefore the engine number list would seem to have been a way of satisfying Cams that they would be completed.
CAMS approved the new models on the bassis that they had begun production on Wednesday the 1st of August and the first of these had been completed the on the 14th the day before their recognition date on Wednesday the 15th of August, it seems that it took until the following Wednesday the 22nd of August before the 150 list statrted to be made up as a likely condition of the CAMS approval on the 15th.
This meant that these first few were not available to have thier engines recorded by the due date for the completion of the list, however several of these did have their engine numbers recorded on the Warranty reporting Vin list at a latter date.

As production proceeded into September some of the 150 listed engines do not appear to even have been fitted to completed XU-1's due to spare parts requirements from seperate sources.

The 150 list is a good guide as to many of the final spec XU-1's but by no means is it a complete or accurate list with others that had engines fitted in the two weeks leading up to the formation of the list were not recorded.
In the fullness of time a couple more XU-1's built between the 14th of August and the 22nd of August may be found.

The best and most relaible way to distinguish between the the earlier July batch of AU-1's and the August produced ones is;

1.
firstly as stated in the parts books ( the engine numbers were stamped in order ) before and after JP 386598.

2.
by the production dates up to the 9th of August were mostly the earlier ones and after the 14th of August was the latest upgrade models.

the 150 list is useful but in no way is a definitive list.

All I'm seeing is a list of engines
Not VIN's

So lets match the engines to VIN #'s and lets see how many still exist

The Engines I have not been able to match to Vins on the warranty reporting list are;

JP 386662
386680
386706
386895
387156
387165
387217
387969
388046
388860
389980
390021
390080
390021
390080
390086
390105
390512
391895
391883
392506
392514
393340
393301
397954
398028
398043
398366
401833
401842
403333
403398

Looks like more that I thought with no matching Vin some of these will match with ones with no engine number on the warranty reporting list.
And don't feel left out if you are from NZ, as some of the export XU-1's may account for some of these engine numbers.

See if you have had more luck than the rest of us, happy hunting,

MIke
