That top bit that you've already attacked is part of the pot, it has to be removed by force (then you have to figure out how to retain the new bearing without it)

I'd say don't touch it unless you have to replace the bearing
And even then.... most here have opted for another pot with a better bearing and left it as is

I believe there is supposed to be as thin metal retainer for holding the bearing in... like a circlip that goes into a groove in the pot

But your bearing looks like its moved so the retainer might have been long gone

BFI might be your only hope

drift it from the rear is how I got mine out, there should be enough of a lip to get the punch on, and slowly work around the bearing race.
To retain the new one, just centre pop it in a couple of places on the front.

I can tell you've never removed one of these bearings Datto.
No groove and no circlip. The alloy lip is simply machine rolled over to retain the bearing in place.

And there was a sliver of metal left over... that as you say might be the lip... or a retainer

And according to my workshop manual theres a retainer... but not a very good pic of it

Is there al alternative like a roller bearing ect

Sadly no, the ID and OD are so close that there's really nothing available. You can get needle roller bearings in roughly the right size if you could figure out how to retain it but it really needs a proper radial ball bearing. I've considered machining the sleeve away completely to allow more room but the column attaching bolts are really a bit too close to allow this, the sloppy factory bearing is about the only option.

just got back from rare spares. sadly they dont make them anymore, so now im stuck. prob have to look into getting a bearing made to suit

AFAIK Rare Spares never made repro upper column bearings, they just bought up the last of the stock that GMH had.
Les or Cavan may like to correct me if I'm wrong.

I'll have a look tonight and see what I've got laying around.

If I've got the right part no. from the LJ parts book, it says "all" inc 4 cyl. I reckon you're right.
