Its $70 for new tube. They would have to cut down an existing tube, re-weld the end, fit new uni's and re-balance. I couldnt imagine the cost savings to be that great... considering I would also have to find and purchase another tailshaft.

Is Reidy from Northern Drivelines in Scott St closed down Brad?

He had made tail shafts for me in the past and did a good job

My LH workshop manual says a 6 cylinder tailshaft is 2.5", a V8 is 2.75" and a 4 cylinder is 3"!!!!
My LH SL/R 4.2 has a 2.5" (may not be the original)
My LX Sunbird (4cyl) has a 3" (definitely original)
I have a UC 6 cylinder one that is 2.5" (out of an original low milage car)

I'd say your 2.75" is the correct one, but a 2.5" will do the job.

Oh yeah......don't even think of using the one you have, It's Fu#%3d and could do all sorts of damage if you use it. You are obviously building a very nice car and none of us want to see it end in tears (or worse) for you.

Yeah nah, Im going to try and keep with the 2.75in shaft.

Such a shame to see a perfectly good original shaft go to waste...

Just had a better look at my service manual and it says

3" for 4cyl
2.5" for 6cyl
2.5" for 253V8
2.75" for 308V8

So my SL/R4.2 has got the correct tailshaft (2.5"), and only the SL/R 5000 has a 2.75".

So my friend, you definitely need a 2.75" if you want to retain originality. And I've got a few tailshafts, but no 2.75".

slr5000's all had straight tube 2.5 inch. Only the L34 and A9x had 2.75" with stepdown to 2.5" at the diff.

if you want a big shaft (who doesnt) get a hq-z v8 one and get the big end shortened and put the yoke back in the same alignment and rebalance.

Last time I got that done was about 25 years ago, so it was a lot cheaper. Is that the general going rate for a balance job?
