G'day lads haven't been on for a while been busy, I am in the process of working out a brake / steering upgrade for the ute. I have a disc brake UC rear end, which is close enough to standard track so will be a straightforward swap over, new spring hangers and a new tailshaft should see it right.

The question remains over the front end.

I am thinking maybe a UC front end, using the rack and pinion steering, but the track is 50mm bigger than standard FJ. I reckon the right wheels will sort that out, the question is, how much clearance around the disc caliper is there for messing about with wheels? I will most likely be using 15X7 rims with low profile tyres to keep in the standard gaurds.

Benefits as I see them is that the brakes will be matched front / rear and I will get a decent rack mounted in a stock set up, as well as being able to use a UC sump and pick up.

Apart from the offset question, is the front end the same accross UCs fitted with disc front / drum rear or were they different (I expect that the proportioning valve would be diferent)

Also, the bore diameter of the booster? I am thinking hot rod style lever action from the pedal to a rear mounted booster under the tray floor at this stage, XA Ford master (1 inch bore I beleive) / Gemini booster as per the hot rod boys - got to keep the fire wall clean!

Thaks in advance for any input!

Cheers

Doug

Awesome photos on the last page. That van would look amazing with it on some widened period stockies too!

You could go blank P76 (19mm narrower per side) or Centura ( approx. 12mm per side) rotors on the UC front end / spindles, drilled to Torana stud pattern and machined down 12mm in diameter with the UC PBR calipers fitted with HX / Z PBR caliper slides.

Or go the same / either rotors full size on HQ stub axles with choice of various HQ / WB calipers.

Castlemaine Rod Shop have some 2" dropped spindles also to suit this arrangement.

There's a few threads on these choices in the Tech section.

Beautiful car old mate...

Thanks for that Heath yep I do plan on matching the wheels on the van -- just have to settle on what is going on the ute first!

GTR - U9X thanks for those suggestions, I will have a look around the tech section also. It is currently running a HR front end which has a few options and has some established rack conversions as well, I was thinking of trying to get a stock UC front end in with just wheels to fix the track "problem" imposed by RTA ... just so it ends up with a complete brake system. I figure if I have to mod the UC front anyway, I would be ebtter off sticking with the HR front end and saving some new engineering for a whole new front end.

Cheers

the old hr trick was to mount lh discs left to right and reverse mount the calipers...if that makes sence
i don't see how uc discs/calipers would differ from lh/x too much
maybe try that?

Wow is it really August since I logged in? Time flies when your having fun aye ... got the email about the parts hotline which prompted me that it had been a while. I am thinking I might just leave well enough alone on the front / rear ends on the ute, it does the job and I now have yet another project that I will set up from scratch:

And no, it won't be staying as a 4wd!

Thanks for the input its all good for the new project, hopefully getting stuck in to that later this year or early next ...

Just got back from 4 weeks away with a few friends with the old vans:

Hi Stinga, thanks for that. Plans for the van are not in concrete yet, I did want to go full ICV and SS Commodore gear, but dollars and simplicity might rule and end up with V6 Commodore ... probably Ecotech as I have yet to hear a tuff sounding Alloytech (even though they make more power!) Thanks RallyRed glad you like the car its my pride and joy.

Cheers Doug

Loving the new project, there's something about a panel van that gets me all excited.
