I've got the LH side back to bare metal, got the panel nice and straight and wiped some bog over it just to make it flat.

picked up another vk 5 speed, and a m20 gearbox and 3.08 diff today.

Apparently the VK 5 speed is only good for 160hp. I looked into getting one a little while ago. Not gunna happen.

Did you use a waterproof primer? PA10 is real good. Most regular primer is porous, so it may look good, but still lets the moisture through. I know, made the same mistake years ago.

I'm using white Knight SLS etch primer.
the left side is all most done, put a few more coats of primer than rub it back again and put a final coat on.

pretty good for a 55yo mechanic (dad) that taught him self to spray paint and panel beat and a 15 almost 16yo kid that has no idea

Thanks dave, all up it only took about 4 decent days to do that side, at the end of each day dad kept asked me if i was sick of rubbing yet, just keep telling him no.

I've already got the colour picked out, found out its a factory Torana and HQ colour.

First day at tafe was today, was pretty good. the tafe at taree has both a chassis and engine dyno, so might see if i can put the ute on it when its finished.

did more to the ute, rubbed the top off the grey primer and sprayed primer filler on it.

thanks dom. across the back where the number plate goes is done, and the other side is all stripped back to bare metal, trying to get all my school stuff done so i really get into it.

My first car was a HZ that I talked my mate into respraying for me. What a job. It didn't look as straight as yours and it was only 10 years old. Those were the days.

I'm just lucky that my dad has done a fair few Utes, and that he doesn't want me to take short cuts and just bog it all, the car club we're in is having a garage crawl and there coming out to our place, hopefully the weather is fine, so i might see what some of the old guys that are really picky say about it.

and the goal is to have it running and almost on the road by the 26th may for weekend on wheels, and Dad wants the hot rod done and on the road by than. so its a fairly big task.

Cool rims. But you could use a shorter drum. Don't go the 'not low enough' route. You won't like it.

yer its to far up the guards for my liking, dirt roads and low cars dont work, i'm using the same rear springs, because they were sagged a little, and i got a set of front ones that are about 1/2 inch maybe an 1inch lower than standard for mowing a mates yard, so I should get a decent stance.

also picked up a vs commodore thats rooted but the motor is ok of a mate for all the roller rockers, valve springs and anything else dad wants off it.

I've been helping dad with the hot rod and I've started another project (everyone has to have more than one going at the same time) so I haven't touched the ute.

new project is a motorized park bench type thingo, ride on mower hydro trans axle (not fast), mower front axle, should seat about 4-6 people it will have a little awning so you can drive around the car shows and always be in the shade. its gota be ready by 26th of may for weekend on wheels, just something different, i was gonna do one with 2 bar stools, but this is more practical.

Danny
