This old girl has been sitting in the paddock for over 10 yrs
<a href="http://s79.beta.phot.../Bedford truck" target="_blank"><img src="http://i79.photobuck...ck/bedfrd2.jpg" border="0" alt="BD2"/></a>
it appears there was a hawk living in the cab for a while,
lots of feathers / crap and a dead hawk
off to the workshop to strip, had to get a tow truck as the brakes didn't work. Master seized
started and drove it out of paddock and I can still reg it.

Is that motor in the standard location?
I don't think I've seen one of these before and it looks a bit weird with a donk in the cab
I guess there is supposed to be a console over it or something?

Some of the Perth guys might have seen it around - was the work vehicle for Maddington Motorcycle Wreckers.
I used to have a Bedford van years ago - factory black and windowless - looked mean - would love to have another one.
Good score.
Whats the plans for it ? V8 and extended tray for a car transport ?

Tony Windsor in Newcastle had one of those, he put an EFI 304 and auto behind the cab, under the tilt tray.
I've got all the parts catalogues off these things if you need to know anything.

the engine number prefix starts FE, I had a look at the motor tonight but too grotty to read the reast, can clean it up later. as for the ID tags will check tomorrow at depotCan I get the engine number and the ID plate details off it? I've been trying to place where the CF Bedford engine numbers fit, I think they are in the HQ number series but once I have a PSN and an engine number i'll know. This one is either an aussie 3 or 4spd (I think the LWB were trimatic or M22 4spd). The 3 and 4spd both used the same shifter (4spd off other Holdens and Toranas), and it was remote mounted from the gearbox.

Holdens just chucked in a 173 or 202 with 3 speed syncro but didn't change the diff so motor over revs
mine has a 173 and a tonner 4 spd(changed by previous owner)
also there is a cowling that covers the engine in cab
my plan
lengthen chassis and add lazy axle with rocker setup
I have a black injected 202
injected gas unit for dual fuel
Tarago 5 spd
HQ salisbury LSD
HQ disk conversion kit for the front
the idea is to end up with a tilt tray car transporter plus a removable stock crate so I can shift cattle and sheep
first I have to renovate the cab

yeah the motor belongs there, these Bedfords were originally fitted with Vauxhall slant 4 cyl same as used in the LC/LJ/TA Toranas

They actually had either low comp 173 (FE prefix) or hign compression 202 (FL prefix) with aussie 3spd M15, 4spd M22 or trimatc. If you are going to build one for a tilt tray/transporter you'd be better off with the original trimatic off the VK EFI engine than a manual Tarago box! And the HQ Salisbury and available wheels may not really be strong enough for the GCM of the truck and the load! You might be better off with a diff like one out of a F250, or C20 or J20 or something like that. Some of the Dana60 diffs came in 3.54:1 ratio, you can find these in many of these trucks like the Jeep J20.
Greg at Classicoz has a LWB van (camper) there at the moment he is wrecking if you need parts. It had a 307 Chev and TH350 in it when he bought it.

Thanks mate. That PSN (J525457) puts it as May 1976, and all the Holdens I have recorded from Dandenong at the same time had engine numbers around 745-750000 so I think this one answers the question, looks like CF Bedfords used HQ series engine numbers! Note that if you want to re-use that engine, just put a 173HC head onto it and she'll be a high comp engine, 173's just used a 202 head to make a low comp engine unlike the bigger engines which had different pistons.

but I will have 2 rear axles with a tandem rocker setup and I could use jag studs which are 1/2 "I think you'll find HQ wheel studs and Jag wheels won't be up to the task! Or F100 either. You'll need probably 1000kg minimum rims, possibly double rims like an F350 has. I'm assuming you want a car carrier, so you have to add the weight o fhe car you are carrying, plus the tray plus the vehicle itself. So you are looking at least 2 tonne load on the rear axle as a guess.
