I've had "blank" strata exhaust manifolds where the wastegate port would normally be before.......bacically the pad is there to enable one to machine a V band groove and open the wastegate port up.

You keep your eyes peeled like a superhuman hawk and nab the set up as soon as you see it....You can't buy them new anymore and I'm certain Mike Vine, although still selling kits for roughly $5500....DOES NOT offer strata 5 kits for sale, only the strata 2/3 type.

Hi Mervex,
I have a strata 2A turbo manifold which appears to be the Strata 5 shape - - but stamped 2A.
The date stamp is 78108 and it is number 9.
The SL/T Torana UC's seem to have the smaller 2A design - but they were purchased after
the date stamp on the intake.
Can you provide me with any information on what holden this may have come out of?

There is nothing too sinister about the wrong id plate on the manifolds.if I rememer correctly sometimes parts were in short supply and a strata 5 manifold on a strata 2 kit was no problem if it had to be deliveredWe were sold a few kits like that, with not quite right parts but it all worked fine in the end.
i am looking at making a "strata 5" inlet manifold (using mandrel bent bends)if time permits for my 202.There were many different turbine housing sizes used on these kits, what size are you using stretch?
As for carbs,SU s were used at first then when supply dried up NGM then used CD Strombergs. That was good for me as their dyno was tied up with the 308 kits,I was asked to sort out the needles for the 186 carbs.I was given a strata 2 kit which i had to fit in a weekend then come up with the corrcet mixture needle for the retail kits.Found some really good streets for mixture testing around Melb!! a bit naughty when i think about it now.

Thanks so much for the photos - the intake manifold with the larger plenum (photo on top) has 2A stamped on it.
Is that the 2A or the 5?
I have the same manifold as the top one with 2A also stamped on it, number 9 with date stamp 78108
I was wondering how do I figure if this was fitted on a UC torana or VB commodore?

Well...........the difference in power between the 2 manifolds is night and day...........a friend of mine that went from Strata 2 to Strata 5 manifolds with no other changes except a little more timing and fattening the fuel up a tad, dropped a full second over the 1/4 mile.........which probably equates to about an easy 40 hp improvement. I heard a rumour that the new owners of CRS (castlemaine rod shop) have the original moulds to remake these manifolds again and put them out into the public for sale. Just a Warning though........They WILL NOT be cheap.
EZE-10S used a Garrett Strata 2 kit on their LJ Torana with a modified Strata 2 inlet manifold with increased plenum volume and a big 4 barrell carb and pulled low 10 second 1/4's. The real beauty of these kits is their simplicity and robustness, they are pretty industrial in their construction and make easy power. For me, I love the notion of having what sounds like a very mild, quiet engine in a street car that is super sedate, easy to drive off boost and has pleasant manners with nothing gaping out of the bonnet..............BUT...........when it comes to having alot of fun (on the strip of course), it's a totally different ballgame and engine.
For anyone trying to source a Big Plenum Strata 5 inlet manifold, all I can say is good luck trying to get your hands on one. In the 15 years I've been playing with these kits, I have only ever came across maybe 5 manifolds...one is on my Klunker engine, another on is in the pics I posted above, I know of another one I sold to a fellow Torana owner, who has also came across and purchased another one for pretty serious cash............and the only other one I know of is on a members car here and the dudes name is Deano.
Another thing the strata 5 manifold seems to create is a faster boosting engine over the smaller manifold. Its also interesting to note that the exhaust manifolds also have differences (some might argue they are all the same) with the main difference being number 4 and 5 exhaust ports on the manifold dont have a port divider in the manifold............these were designed as a true split pulse manifold to feed one bank of 3 cylinders into one entry point to the split pulse turbine housing and the back three cylinders to feed the other entrance of the scroll. So as a result exhaust ports 4 and 5 shared a common outlet into the turbo, all the other manifold exhaust ports were separated with port dividers.
I've owned and seen both exhaust manifolds over the years and noted that some of the wastegate ports on the underside of the manifold are also slightly different (thicker webbing around the gate port)...............I think some of the earlier manifolds has a problem with cracking under where theturbine bolts to and travelling into where the waste exhaust gas exits the wastegate.
I would also love to pick Mervex's brain a little if I could, he must have some awesome facts, knowledge and advice to share. Would be great if he could chime in with any info he may have collected over the years to share here. If it is Dave Inall (mervex) that would be even better, as he's a wealth of knowledge from what I hear.
I dont know if its from the original link that was posted for my add thats on ebay, but I have noticed a huge explosion of watchers in the last day and a half..............its up to 82 as of right now.......wow! that alone kinda blows me away. Anyway, if anyone has any more questions about these kits please feel free to ask away.....I;m happy to try and answer as best I can................cheers
