And the rear qtr ive welded half of it on but stopped
once i noticed its sticking out toward the guard arch
it just looks twisted..tried to push ith panel under
more and clamp but its still not right..i will cut it
off and get jason greenwood (patch maker) to fab me
one up.i just tried to do it cheaper as cash is tight.
It looks great from side on but once you stand up and
look down at it its out by 3/4 inch at arch

Well i can tell you one thing this panel from rares
Is good.only thing wrong with it is the profile is
smaller than the original.first time ive actually
enjoyed doing it.i didnt cut all of the original sill
out as the panel doest go right to the ends where the original panel is leaded over.so it 2 things wrong
actually but was no biggy.i removed the lead though
as was welded close to it..boot lines up well

Hi maz was just reading you last couple of pages and seen a pic of the bonnet hinge retainers you have welded on, first I'm thinking my eyes are getting bad, but I think you have a little problem with the right hand one, looks to be dropping away at the front,,,   I didn't want to say but if you don't lift it the drivers side back part of the bonnet will sit up.

Maybe just try fitting the bonnet before re doing as only sometimes you may get the movement you need, anyway if you come across a problem with fitting on that right side you have a place to start.

Over haul you are doing a great job

Cheers gong

Hi john.yeah i know what you mean.i actually welded it
in exactly the same spot i unpicked from using the spot
drill holes as a guide to line it up.i knew about it
but i thought to myself thats where they put it..
anyway i ask cuz when he had it and asked about how
the back was sitting up and showed a pic and he said
thats about how it was when he had it.i asked whether
the hinges i tried the test with were the ones he had
on it and are the ones.i was abit peeved off.at the
time i was aligning it i was more worried about how
they had welded it at the rear and not sitting down on
the heater shelf.they built up the weld on that side
and i just cut through it and left the weld there so
i knew where to put it when welding back on..im going
to get some after market alloy hinges and try those.
if it still sits up i have another hinge bracket i
will put on.your eyes are bloody good john..

Thanks Dave.i like cutting and welding but hate it
when its not right .not real good on the panel forming
bit.small areas im okay with but when its completely
the wrong shape i wont have a go.i go all chicken do
a dummy spit put covers over it and walk inside 😂😂😂
There isnt much more cutting to do now ...thank god.
Got a major area on rhs rear where shes been hit up
the bum. has pushed rear in and creased it around
where the bumper bolts up on the side.not sure what im
going to do there.i will show yous what i mean soon..

Thanks john.im hoping when i try another set of hinges
it will be good.have you noticed many built up at the
back like that.maybe they have done it because of where
they spot welded the front at.when i tested it it was
like an inch up but i pushed it dowm with hands and
was around 5mm-6mm still so maybe the hinge is rooted

Bonnet sitting high at the back corners seems to be a common problem LH LX UC HQ etc, no?

Common yes..only because of people not adjusting
the bonnet properly bro.must put bonnet right up so it
pushes the rear of bonnet hinge down..

Hey Maz, stick with it, your doing an awesome job!. I know how it feels: 1 step forward, 3 steps back, but all of a sudden, things start falling into place.

The thing I see most is people cutting away the bottom of the hinges and making the hinge hole bigger,,, anyway them alloy bonnet hinge retainers you are talking about should fix the problem.

Good luck with it mate as Paul said 1 step forward 3 back then you will hit a forward run.

Cheers john

Hi Maz,

Great to see you getting back into it. Your repairs look amazing, well done. There's a heap of self satisfaction going on right there and I love how John Gong spots these little things we miss.

Keep enjoying the build because it's the best part of owning a Torana.

Cheers

Marty

Primed the lower window sill couple days ago and now
ive stripped the paint from boot area back to bare
metal and epoxied.was going to blast it but it makes
one hell of a mess so done it the long way with paint
stripper.cut out the rear beaver panel as engineer
welded it in incorrect position.he only tacked it in
With a tig. I cut this out of a donor car 7 yrs ago
so i will have no probs fitting this back in.just
need to gap it more to weld.something i didnt know
at the beginning of the build.i wont be welding it
along the bottom as the panel on the inner needs to b
replaced or get fabricator to make one up .dickhead
cut into the rear when he wasnt spose to...pics

Cleaned up the beaver panel a little more with a 3m
Drill strip it wheel and wire wheel to remove more
Brown rust.really it needed blasting but might of
made panel a little thin.built up the weld on edge
where it needed more and other end..dunno what
happened there.anyway treated the infected area 3-4 times
Used a wire brush and scotch bright to get more of the
brown rust off.applied metal ready with paint brush.i
wiped the rust off and reaplied to get rid of the brown rust.rinsed under tap and using wet rag.iwiped it dry.normally you dont as it will wipe off the phosphate coating.i didnt have to worry bout thatas used p 80 prior to treating .
i treated area for roughly a couple hrs keeping it wet
at all times.you will notive its its blue oil slick color
in places and thats how its spose to go when you do it correct..used the red oxide and weld through primer.
couldnt get the copper one at kennedys welding supplies.
Will give it 24 hrs to dry..looks good
