Back to the future....

Changed the oil the other day and found this on the magnetic drain plug:

Attached File  4F31D5DB-EA8B-4BD6-AC1E-A2BF832B7578.jpeg   249.04K   15 downloads

Bit of a suprise as the engine felt and sounded fine.

I have seen the insides of this engine often enough to know that the big pieces are smashed pushrod cups from the roller lifters.

So I admitted defeat and pulled the intake, rocker covers, rockers, pushrods and lifters.
The rockers were fine and as expected there were broken lifters, four pushrod cups in total.

I had a bit of a search around the net while thinking what to do. There were certainly a few unhappy users of these COMP cams lifters. Always needs to be put in perspective that unhappy people complain and the happy ones are invisible.

I can’t find a reason for the failure. I think it would be crazy to put the same parts back in again and expect a different outcome. The COMP ones are made to tolerate high rpm race use so I don’t think the size of the cam should be an issue?
I decided to fit some Howard’s Hydraulic roller lifters this time. There seem to be few complaints about them on the forums.

Fired the beast up today and all seems good. The Howard’s lifters are much quieter than the COMP ones (a common comment on the forums). The old COMP ones were louder than any other car I have owned.

I of course had the dizzy 180 degrees out at first as is usual for me....

Fingers crossed!

I still do that.

Howards are ok, Comp suck, Crane is the best for holdens.

Not to mention that the factory racing team used them for 20 years.

So I have clocked up another 800 kays since changing the lifters.
Oil change time...

A few small encrusted bits of metal that are compatible with leftovers from the last event.

It’s been a lot nicer driving with the reduced engine noise. Hardly quiet as a kitten but much improved.

It’s free. Re purposed hand drying towel that otherwise gets thrown out.
Part of my “reuse, repair, refurbish and repurpose” philosophy.

Check out my low carbon footprint! (Snigger)

You mean from one of these? I always assumed that the towel was removed and washed.  Great idea though.

My high school had Alsco Linnen hand towel machines. I'm pretty sure the hand towel rolls were washed and reused, over and over and over.

Similar but the single use tea towel size version. Gets thrown in the bin unless someone wants them.
Excellent kitchen and shed towels/ rags.

Waste not want not I say. Too much 'disposable' society attitude these days.

The trouble is that products are built to be thrown out. Try and find parts for any 3 year old LG appliance.

Agree. The pinnacle of consumerism.

And so it ends.

Not with a bang, but with a rattle.

Drain plug looks ominous.

Anybody like to hazard a guess before I do the post mortem?

I would not be surprised if it is lifter / valvetrain related, have seen so many modern flat tappet lifters from reputable brands just flat out fail

Didn't you have roller rocker problems before Rexy? Looks the same again to me.

This thread has been an adventure and a half.

I think given the circumstances and history of the motor, you've gotten some decent legs out of it.

The motor or the thread?? :)

I guess the rattle is a tapping noise and not a knocking noise?

Well at least it was still running even if it sounded like a tappety 253.

Only got as far as taking the rocker covers off and the bad news is that the rocker gear looks ok at a quick glance.

Time to dig deeper....
