Got my Yella Terra Stage 3 head running on the 186 today. Being a Stage 3 it has the larger valves, double valve springs, modified inlet port, mildly polished ports, extra retaining bolts on the manifolds and roller rockers. Had very few drama's getting it on which i was happy with, as this was the first time i'd done a head swap, had a mate of mine who is a third year apprentice mechanic handy which was helpfull. We pulled the old head off and replaced it with the YT head using new welch plugs along with head, manifold, thermostat and thermostat housing gaskets after a few cans of VHT gloss yellow the head came up a treat.

Only drama's with the swap was i had to replace one of the roller rockers as it wasn't getting any oil, after swapping a few rockers around and establishing that the pushrod was full of oil we figured out the roller rocker wasn't getting any oil from the top of the pushrod because the seat which mounts the pushrod to the rocker had recessed to far from wear. So one new roller rocker airfreighted from the mainland overnight and some adjustment of the valve lash and the head is now cranking.

The improvment is awesum and im really impressed with it. The engine now has significantly more power across the rev range especially up top where the cam starts to work a bit harder. Im more pleased with the difference in the sound the engine makes now it sounds much more angry while putting along idels even better than before and full noise is heaps of fun. After some "road testing" last night the Lc has ever so slightly better acceleration than an auto Vl commodore with a sports exhaust which im happy with considering that it still runs only a single stromberg and auto. So it looks like and X2 setup is on the top of the list now.

:D

Great pick up Red6, She's pretty sweet, I cant wait to see it in the flesh as she looks pretty straight. Sound like your going well anyway, havent heard from you for a while.
I think it's about time you sent me some details so i can let you know when the next tassie torana run is on as there is one coming up in April to Launceston and i think you should bring it up for the day, will post details when its all finalised anyway. Should have mine there too finally.

Cheers

Les

Thought id drag this post back up again to let you all know that the Lc 2-door has now had for the past month or so had a set of twin strommberg carbys running on a X2 manifold with the manifold cooling and running the original style throttle linkage/ kickdown setup, just with the linkage from the firwall to carby cut and shut...all runs pretty sweet but it idles at pretty high rpm because i need to muck about with the return spring setup and carbys a bit more to get it spot on...anyway all said it gets along pretty well now and has surprised its fair share of rice burners!

I'll post some pics over the weekend to give you guys a peak

On another note uni holidays are coming up in 2 weeks so i will have a month or so to give some much needed attention to my other torana my Lc 4 door which some of you may remember from the old old forums if youv'e been around that long. The 4-door donated its 186, exhaust, extractors, springs, shocks and swaybars to the 2 door so its now in a few peices. Put the 161 from the 2-door back into it a few weeks back so the plan is to put the m-20 back in sus out all the bolt ons for the engine and get the suspension sorted.

After its all back together i hope to get it registered latter in the year and take it to next years falls festival for new years so i can represent...there were heaps of sweet old holdens there last year but no torana's as i was to scared to take mine... then eventually say goodbye and sell it to someone who will give it the attention it deserves.

the car is my daily driver and it likes to run on premium petrol so tripples dont agree with the uni students budget. next on the wish list is a supra 5 sp and a bit of interior work, then longer term goals are a new exhaust system with pacemakers and a xu-1 muffler, and an lsd

wish list has evolved now as an excessivly large knocking sound has started eminating from the bottom end.

looks like i'll be learning how to rebuild a short motor in the very near future...

scored a stock virgin bore 202 red from a 68,000 mile Hq wagon today so ill be putting that in for a while so i dont have to listen to the disgusting noises coming from my bottom end at present, suspected broken piston ring/ skirt, so it will be nice knowing im not going to destroy my head by continuing to drive the sick engine.

plans are to baby it around untill next uni holidays and then rebuild the 186 or the 202 with some more exciting components whn i have some more time and $$$'s

Broken piston rigs will have excess oil entering the firing chamber and smoke will pour out your head.
Knocking sound is more to do with timing.. Perhaps your twins are over carbouretting.

i've taken the twins off at the moment as the engine is sick so i shouldnt be giving it a hard time anyhow. i thought it might be carby related as they wernt set up 100% but its still there and ive played with the timing heaps, it does blow a bit of smoke under load but not enough to be a completely stuffed oil ring.

im interested to try out a 202 with all my go fast bits on it anyhow!

You might want to do a pressure test both dry and wet. You'll soon know if it is piston rings

pulled the 186 and trans out today and took off the yt head and removed the cam and sump/pickup and transfered them into the 202 then gave the 202 a good clean and degrease in preparation for a fresh coat of paint tomorrow and then too hopefully get the 202 in minus its stupid non adjustable valved head and then get the trans back in, car has to go over the pits again because of an issue with a previouse roadworthy i had done but because of the engine number change its not that much of a pain. what a way to spend the weekend!

well the 202 is in and its all back in and running ok considering that its unregistered so as yet i havent been able to give it a proper test and tune.

went for a rego inspection yesterday and failed because my number plate light and a brake light was out, which i was aware of i didn't change these items however as i was locked out of my boot becuase some little#@% tryed to break into the boot a few months back and stuffed the lock. so off i went to the locksmith this morning who opened up my boot however in the process of parking the car in their underground car park i managed to rip the exhaust out of the extractors and fold it back on a 90 degree angle to its original position on some rediculose peice of metal sticking out of the ground for their security doors. so now its in at the exhaust shop getting that cut and shut, then hopefully i'll be able to get back to the road wrothy joint this arvo and get it signed off but considering that so far today ive spent over $100 trying to change 2 light globes im not so sure... :<_<:

unlucky mate, had a similar thing happen to my LJ i drove over a securing point for a steel bollard to go into the ground and tried to reverse over it but kept getting stick, lucky i didnt rip my exhaust but wasnt far off i reckon. car is looking real good BTW and a bit of a side bar i spotted a twin of your LC in NSW last month same colour and all - small world.

Cheers,
Mick

well the lc is registered again now and back on the road doing daily dutys, the 202 isn't to bad although it has quite a bit of blow by it goes pretty well with all the go fast bits and has much more get up an go than the 186.

im going to be doing some interior work in the near future got some correct sandlewood door trims coming in the post from lakeside and a set of new kickboards off ebay. going to then get a new cover for the back seat as the one in it is faded quite badly and then im going to start looking at getting some aftermarket seats into it. at the moment im thinking i'll go some secondhand recaro's off ebay as im not keen on putting in typical aftermarket race seats but i do want the lateral support...

something like this style of seat...
recaros on ebay

anyone put these in there lc/lj?

I have a pair of Rearo SRIII look-alike seats. When I get them back from the panel beater (hes made mounts) ill trial fit and take a few pics. Ive decided against putting them in because of insurance issues and the fact that Ive grown to love the gtr buckets. Cushioning the hard suspension.

just a little update to let you guys know what ive been up to..

as you may or may not know ive sold of my Lc 4-door to postal dood, read about what ever he's up to with it here

selling of the four door means ive got a bit of cash to blow on the two door, after much consideration ive decided that im going to try to find myself a set of recaro bucket seats, after hours of research and browsing ricer forums such as nissansilvia.com and boostcruising.com ive managed to settle on what im looking for, even though i think ive been permanently scared by the experience. I think we should all be thankfull how little BS is present on these forums after i spent a few days scouting through these other forums.

im trying to source a set of seats from a proton satria Gti they look like this...
Posted Image

they made the little rice boxes from 99-04 so finding a decent secondhand set shouldn't be to hard compared to finding secondhand parts for the torana.

i also stripped the black block down and removed the starfire rods and couterweight crank which ive hidden away till a little latter, and disposed of the block which is useless to me.

wish me luck on my search...
