Howdy,

I've been a bit slack since my introductory post and I thought it's about time I posted some pics of the project at hand.

The start...

Swapping engine, front & rear suspension, etc. at my mates place...

Posted Image

Posted Image

Cleaned up the engine bay... Not sure why I did it first as I now have to be careful not to mess it up :fool:

Posted Image

Posted Image

even cleaned up the dash... :fool::fool:

Posted Image

Posted Image

Fitting carbies and other goodies to fire it up after 12mths so it can be moved to our new house...

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

The beast purring like a kitten in its new home...

Posted Image

more pics to follow...

Cheers,
Jeff

That engine sounds great. When i had triple dellorto's on my six it sounded so good at full noise in the car. You will love the induction sound, sounds like a nascar.

Your's look like webers, but they'd sound very similar. Your engine seems very smooth at idle, do you have a very mild cam?

By the way, love the car. I'd love an LC 2 door.

Ohhh awesome. I love that sound. The Triples sounded good on my car but those beat it for sure. :)

The bay came up well too mate. :)

Thanks panthervs. It was sprayed with Jet Black acrylic - the brand was Concept Paints I think.

G'day studricho. Yeah, they are 45mm webers and they sound pretty cool at full noise.

The engine has a reasonable size cam in it. It's a Heatseeker Stage 5 and has a duration of 310 on the inlet and 315 on the exhaust (246/251 @ .05 lift) - valve lift is .48in. The idle is fairly good but is set pretty high at the moment as I haven't bothered balancing the carbs since they were put on - it normally idles around 1100rpm.

And now the fun stuff (not) that I've found so far!

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

Some dodgy repairs on the A & C pillars...

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

And the usual boot floor rust. It took ages to get the crappy sound deadener and bog off from the previous owners attempted fix... :gun:

Posted Image

and what was the spare wheel well...

actaully that's not too bad for rust repairs, I am working on one a lot worse. what are the floors like and are you game to pop the screens and check?

The floors look OK - there's a bit of surface rust and that looks about it. I have pushed both the front and rear screens (pics to be added shortly) and was pleasantly suprised. The front had a small hole in the top right of the frame whilst the rear had half a dozen small holes which I patched / filled with a MIG.

On a whole, I really can't complain too much. As you say, there are examples that are a lot worse in the rust department than mine. I was a little apprehensive about pushing the screens as I've heard how bad they can be but I guess if you want a proper job it's something that needs to be done. I was lucky...

The front only had a small hole at the top right corner that was pretty easily filled with the MIG.

Posted Image

The rear was also pretty good with the bottom right being the only really bad bit. A couple of other spots need small patches inserted...

I'm a bit of an amateur at welding as I've only had the toy for a few months but we got there in the end. :D

Once the repairs were done it was time to seal the window frames and the inside of the roof with some POR15... A time consuming process I must say...

You have to clean the surfaces to remove grease, oil, etc and then apply Metal Ready to convert the rust and etch any bare metal.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

Followed by 2 coats of POR15...

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

And then a light spray of undercoat before the POR15 dries completely...

Posted Image

Job done! :D

Now I have to choose the next bit to tackle.....

That looks great. That rust isn't too bad really. I've seen a lot worse and my daily and race car have comparable rust to that.

Keep us posted.

As Ryan pointed out, it's about time I posted an update on what I've been up to....

Next thing on the list was to patch the holes in the parcel shelf as it's a good spot to hide my novice welds. :D

It turned out OK....

After the parcel shelf came the LHR lower quarter rust repair.... I made the mistake of trying to cut out the bare minimum of the rusty panel when I should have cut off the whole bottom - things you learn... :D

Next on the list.... Started cutting the front guard for the flutes... Thanks to gtr161s for the dimensions... :spoton:

Posted Image

and stuck my head in the hole to find the end of the sill rusted.

Posted Image

After some deliberation, I decided to cut off the bottom of the guard rather than remove the whole thing...

Posted Image

Made up a repair section that was slightly larger than the rusted area. It was trimmed as it was tacked in....

Posted Image

Posted Image

Trimmed rusted section to roughly match the size of the patch...

Posted Image

POR15'd the inner end of the sill and primed the section to be welded. Also put some holes in the inner sill panel to apply cavity wax through once the car is painted.

Posted Image

Tacked patch before fully welding and grinding...

Posted Image

Posted Image

POR15'd the outer sill / floor area and primed the lower section where the bottom of the guard will be welded back...

Posted Image

Welded the bottom of the guard back on...

Posted Image

Just needs a bit of panel beating once the flutes are done to fix some warpage at the weld...
