Got it running on the weekend, sounds crankier with the new intake.
Must be because of the extra volume before the butterfly's.

G'day, been reading this with interest! One question, that heat sheild, is it an ACL? I've not long fitted one under my SU's with next to no difference... even the shield gets bloody warm. I have drilled and tapped the inlet manifold to screw it to, not touching the zorst anywhere, still loads of transferred heat. The first sheild I made was .8mm ali. The fancy... expensive ACL is no different! I'm about to try an 'exhausting' type situation...  from the pipes to the guard flutes.

Thoughts please?

Sorry for not replying, ive been slack.
the heat shield is held on by some m6 bolts i welded to the pipe's.
and the carbs and manifold still get hot but its a huge improvement over nothing.

the runners are 17.5 inch, played on the dyno last weekend and ended up with 19.5 inch's, the more i added the more it liked it.

did 11 pulls.

Went to a TnT last night and in the burnout it spat no6 intake and exhaust lobe and their lifters out the side of the block!!!

It was only doing 6800 in the water.

It was still running on 5 cylinders with no oil pressure...........

From what i can tell its just fatigue/too much spring pressure, cast cores normally break behind the first cam journal though which has got me stumped.

Undecided as to whether to put a lazy flat tappet back in or go a to a roller

Hello Kevin,

That Cam was brittle to break like that, don't you think?

Thank-you for the runner information.

Hope you can repair her in Time, as that is an exercise you didn't need.

They only break when you are having a go.

Nice work, mate.

Blue line is 19.5 in runner length
Red line is 18.5 in runner length
Ran out of spacers after that, peak was at 7000

The runner length certainly made a big difference in the mid range.

Where are you measuring from, the head to the intake side of the carb or the throttle side?

From the valve to the bell mouth.
I've got to get the other sheets when I get a chance, with 17.5 length the curve was considerably worse

I had 17.5 as well with 6 inch ram tubes. No difference felt going up from 3" tubes. Now I have a 29" extractor style inlet, from the carbs, with a Weber filter next to the battery, and the difference was surprising. Far better than ram tubes or the airbox I used to have on it. Initially I made it for a totally different look and when I tested it before finishing I felt a lot more pull from quite low down right through to around 5000. The 3.55 diff feels too low, but the soon to be installed BW will get 3.45 gears so should be better again.

That's a really good comparison to show Kev, I bet you got a heap of fellas grabbing the measuring stick & walking to their engine bay, I know I did.
Still impressive figures mate.

What intake (brand etc) are you running? You really have me thinking...

Im just using an old 'redline' manifold that is quite short, will be interesting to measure...

Thanks for posting data, by the way- very helpful!

Yep, cool measurement that.
So purely for comparison, mine with the long Armours manifolds still only measures up for a total of around 14". Doesn't really have a ram tube though.

Yeah I saw your car there goat, was lookin good!
Yeah made a real nasty noise, I've got a gopro vid from under the car but having problems uploading it.

The manifold is a redline 12 port jobbie.
The head is a 12 port too, I'm unsure what effects runner lengths play on 9 port heads yet, haven't quite got there yet.
I can't see it being as effective as an IR setup seeing as there are so many large CSA changes in the inlet tract, but alas haven't fiddled with it yet.

I got it running again on the weekend with the other 9 port engine after a freshen up so I will make it to the 6 bangers

I made it, built a new short, blue rods, old crank from the broken cam saga was salvaged, cast pistons..
Basically freshened up what I ran at 6 banger nats last year, but with a few small tweaks.
Ran 7.57 @ 89.65, 1.56 .060 foot
