Almost identical engine set up to my 308 only I have HQ heads that are not ported. Your looking at around 7-8k including labour.

After some corrective machine work, all new head hardware (valves, springs, retainers etc), new Performer and cam, lifters on top of the usual freshening items it ended up at almost $5K. I didn't port the heads, they were already done.

He then went on to get an engine run-in and dyno, new 650 Quickfuel and a 8" TCE converter which added a few more to the bill.

Hope to get it back on the chassis dyno and off to the track in the next couple of weeks, the engine is in the car and running now.

I remember the days when people thought much more than 400hp out of a 308 was the limit.
Stroker and a set of VN heads really wakes them up eh?

Yep I reckon VN heads, a stroker crank and just a small cam and you start at 400 FWHP nowadays. Technology has come along way. And all from the "crappy little plasitc motors" that people have been calling them LOL....

don`t even need stroker crank to get 400 fwhp from holden v8, and its still drivable.

just a good combination. roller cams are the way to go to make reliable usable power.

Hi Struggler, just a quick 1 you might be able to answer? I recently picked up a black 308, speedpro forged flat top pistons, l34 rods, bored 30 thou, crane 288 solid cam and lifters, worked 308 heads ported yella terra roller rockers, ran low 11s in a mazda with a redline single plane manifold and 750 holley. I bought the motor without manifold and carby, I have a edelbrock performer lying around, would that be as good or should I sell it and try get something else?

in saying that I notice edelbrock don't do a torker to suit black 308 so I would need a redline or something similar?

Also running 4000 Stall

Black 308s are a little limited for intake manifolds but my vote goes for the strip master with the 288 cam a performer is not going to give you full potential

Hi all
New the guy who owned red and black lh slr 5000 ran 10.8 on gas. He was in the torana club of Victoria. I new him as toe cutter, he was good mates with mark the original owner of toranasaurus. He sold the car to someone in Queensland about 15 years ago. Maybe the new owner or someone who new him, could put up some specs of what he was running. But look at the end of the day, you want something that's going to last rather than the most powerful engine you can build. Unless you're got money to burn. As every knows they don't last.

Gunners..... if you want to drive around town then the Performer will work for you.

If you want the maximum top end possible then by all means fit a TP or Stripmaster.

I honestly don't think you can go wrong with the Performer on a stock stroke engine but try a few different spacers to see what it likes best.

JMHO of course !!

Thanks Andrew!!!

Yeah plans are just a weekender!

I have the performer manifold and cant afford TP and i dont like how much work stripmasters need to the ports before you fit it,

So its either keep the performer or try find a 2nd hand redline maxitork? i see pro comp do a single plane for $220 ish new but id assume its crap?

Gunny if your ever in the Werribee area give me a call and if I am home I can take you out and show you what mine goes like.

I have the performer with a 1 inch spacer and a Holley Ultra HP 650 on mine and its a pretty good combination. I am pretty sure you have already got my number from being interested in the indy's I had for sale.

Yeah cheers Wayne !!!

I like the performers but just not sure how they go with the crane solid 288. all google search's lead to 308 solid 288s with single plane's. That's why I wanted to ask fellow awesome torana experts !

Always an interesting question as to what size carby to run. I was always of the belief that a staunch 308 only really needs a 650 but when my dyno man tuned my old hatch, he told me to go to a 750 and the power would increase significantly.  So I did and it made a big difference. Not just in HP but in acceleration too. My 308 was only 350 hp. I went from a 670 to a 770.  I guess you don't know until your try each combo really!

I had a 750 Holley on my old engine and it pulled really well also but I never had the engine on the dyno, the engine had some issues which is why I decided to get it rebuilt. Hopefully someone can chime in with some sort of dyno results between the 2 carbs.

I went from 276 RWHP to 289 RWHP just by changing from a 670 street avenger to a 770 street avenger. I am convinced. But as stated, every combo will differ with the results.

I tried various carbys on the stock stroke 308 I dynoed recently, none made more power than the 650 and they all cost torque.

FWIW I built a 383 SBC a while ago that made its best numbers with a 650HP, 535HP and 500 FtLb. Nothing else made the same torque and the 650 edged them all out on HP by 2 or 3.

I have built other engines that love big carbys but recently I am having better luck with smaller, better built carbs. The money spent on an HP or Proform style contoured body is always well invested.

Again, this is just what I have found.

I have also built a couple of cheap carbys out of old 750 vac's using a secondary block and Proform body. These things are making great power and driveability is good. They also produce more mid-range power due to the slightly slower secondary opening rate compared to a DP.

Parting words..... I still think on a stoke stroke street 308 a Q-jet is hard to beat.

JMHO
