Reading the above posts the front and rear carbs are too rich at idle and up to aprrox 1/2 throttle whereas the center carb (cylinders 3 & 4) is leaner at idle etc.
I think before you get too concerned about choosing the correct plug heat range for your engine you really really need to get the carby balance and mixture needles and settings correct.
The blackened spark plugs show the mixture settings are rich.

on your first picture you can drive a semi trailer through the plug gap.

They do seem rich but what I want to know is if they were set incorrectly or if the have richened up on their own (is that possible).
Should I maybe lean them off a few flats?

The mixture settings can't change on their own. Have the carbs been balanced and tuned since installing on the engine or did you just put them on and run them with the base settings made by the carb reconditioner?

Over carbed and flooding will do it too.
How did the spark look on the tester???
Tell me what part number the coil is and is the module a genuine bosch one then you can go back to frigarsing around with your SU's.
FWIW I know jack shit about SU's...
If you want to do yourself a favour and prove me wrong then beg borrow or steal a known to be good working order coil and dizzy and try substitute them.

Did it look rich, puffing black smoke? So i basically pulled the plugs out, gave them a clean and car fired up beautifully.

Correct , I had a marked hill on the was to the pub , to test my car when I was younger , and found It had to be tuned every 10 days to maintain maximum MPH over the top of the hill .The mixture settings can't change on their own. Have the carbs been balanced and tuned since installing on the engine or did you just put them on and run them with the base settings made by the carb reconditioner?

The spark tester has some sort of led so it was useless for this excercise. I'll have to figure out the coil part number hopefully it is stamped somewhere. The coil was rebuilt so I don't see that being an issue but you might be onto something with the coil.
If it's any help I really had to get up close to the plug to even see the spark.
Cheers

This is was 3&4 plugs look like. I turned front and rear carb jets 2 flats each to lean them off. Ill check the plugs after a bit of driving to see.

Burn is hard to tell from the cleaned plug but looks a tad warm.
Get the carbies and spark sorted and you'll be laughing.

That plug was after about 25mins of driving.
Should the spark look like a blue hair or should it be a lot stronger?

Tan colour should be close.
Check Champion out online.
They may have a photographic guide to colour.
Used to be in the catalog many moons ago.

I ended up making this to try and brack my alternator a little better.
Cut up and welded this to some bent up flat bar

I'm not talking about the the mixture colour, sorry for the confusion, that is to judge the carby mixture, when I say burn, i was talking about the burn on the ground electrode, this is how you gauge heat range. What colour should it be ideally?
That plug was after about 25mins of driving.
Spark should be nice and blue, the bigger the gap, the smaller the spark will be.
In the dark is the best place to see it.

If it is your Picture from when you uploaded it, and it never came through, just put that IMG_3974_zps8e7add31.jpg into your Computer search section, and re-post that Image again when you find it.
Hope I am thinking right. Dave I
p.s. could not find it on the NET, so it must be in your Computer
