Friday I will find out just what it's made of, the moment of truth. It's back to the dyno!
As much as I stand my ground that the figures really don't matter as it has plenty enough go go, I'm still very curious. Along with that it is in major need of a tune and sort out a few minor misses it has at various revs. The one that really bugs me is around 1700 pm, that's where it cruises on the freeway in top.
Oh well time will tell. I'm hoping to do an oil change prior, it now just over 500km on it. Still going to put running in oil back in, but just fresh stuff for another 500, just as the engine builder told me to do! :)

Good luck on the dyno and getting a proper tune for it as well! :)

Well had it tuned and power tested. I am very happy with the results. The car feels so different to drive. It's so smooth and now very simple to drive. It doesn't feel anywhere near as violent in the throttle. As I have said from the start it was never going to be the best or the quickest. But I am very happy with the end result.
It's got 369.3HP at the wheels and 349.9 foot pounds of torque.

It's had a noisy diff from the start. It's only when your coasting along. Seems the worst in fifth or sixth when cruising on the freeway. So I took it the guy that built the diff and took him for a ride. He agreed that it wasa bit nosy and suggested I pull it out and get it back to him. He promises me that as soon as I get it to him he will sort it out and get it back to me ASAP. I have told him that I have a cruise I want to attend down the Great Ocean Road on the 17th November ( with others on this Forum) and he assures me I will have it back. So today I took it out. Also found that one of the axles is starting to twist. Now to get that sorted too. Don't really know what I am going to do, but I will ort it and keep everyone posted.

Photos shortly

A little bit of twist can be ok, but what kind of axles are they?

Nice power! That's 275 killer wasps at the wheels, very solid indeed.

Nice work on the axles, good for one more skid, I'd be looking at some billet jobs!

That's a killer readout from the dyno, there wouldn't be to much in the way or traction after seeing that result, sucks to be the rear end of your car :-)

Bet your a happy chap

Yeah very happy.
The axles are early commodore axles, nothing fancy.
My curiosity revolves around the mark/nick on the spline right where the twist begins.

That's where it's gunna snap like a carrot.

Does that mean that something has scored it and therefore needs rectifying? Or is that just caused by the twist?

Resplined axle - was always going to happen - I would never use a resplined axle again.

You are lucky you found it before the big bang - that can be very eye opening when they go.

I don't think this was resplined. It was only shortened very minorly. I think!

It was a cut spline at some point weather it was originally made that way or subsequently shortened and it is very poor design - splines should be rolled not cut and the smallest diameter of that axle is at the highest stress point and the cutting of the spline cuts the grain structure of the metal.  The sharp root of the spline leaves a beautiful stress riser at the worst possible point.  Is it 28 spline as well?

What sort of diff hub have you got?

Yeah it's 28 spline. As for what hub, I really have no idea. It's a true trac centre, but if hats not what yor aking I'm unsure?

From what your saying, it sounds like I need to have some axles made if I'm going to give it a hard time.
I woulder how long that will take, and what that will cost.
Is there good and bad manufacturers? Do I need to be 31 spline?

Lots of questions I know, but I'm curious and have no experience in this area :)

Cheers and thanks for your thoughts :)

At the power level you are at - I would go 31 spline minimum.  You can get stronger 28 spline axles than those but the difference to go to 31 is not that much and good insurance - the main hassle is you will need to change your true track to suit those axles.  True trac is what I was asking when I said diff hub.

There are a few good axle mobs around - I use Mosers.  My axles were around the $1600 a pair landed here but the exchange rate is much better now so you could probably take a bit out of that so they do cost a bit.

Awesome :)

Sucks that a fresh diff is noisy though

Thanks toranamat69, I would prefer not to change my true trac, it ill get expensive fast. But I guess it's better to spend the money once properly, it will end up cheaper in the long run.
I dropped the centre off to the diff guy today. He had a look at the axle while I was there. He dd turn it down originally, I was wrong. He has a set of billet 28spline axles there ready to go in my stud pattern. I'm thinking to put them in and check them again in another few hundred km's.
He is going to see what he can sort out for me and let me know by the end of the week.

Your right Daz, it does suck, but the guy is very helpful and not shrugging me off. He has built quite a few diffs for my brother, and he has never broken one yet. He seriously punishes his cars, either on the tip or in burn out comps. I trust him and will wit to see what happens

Mat Sunday was yesterday, so no it wasn't me, I was removing my diff. I was however on the ring road on Friday arvo around 2:30 heading to Melton to the diff guy.

Make that on the strip or in burnout comps

Just spoke to my diff guy. He had to get another gear set cause he couldn't really find any reason for my noise. We spoke about the axles when he said if I aw going to get billet axles, just go 31 spline staight up. It's the same cost. He then said he would swap out my true trac to suite at no cost considering the work mine had done. So he is basically changing the centre and gears, supplying new axles and bearings, all for the price of my axes only. AND will have it all ready for mid next week pick up so I can get I back in and car running again for the cruise on he 17th. What a legend!!
Seems this s the smartest way to go, and hold solve all problems :)

All just as you had said toranamat69.

Now let's just hope he comes through

Hope you got a quote on that beforehand Grant because these jobs can quickly blow out. Is it Hans Van Dyke doing your diff?

That's him. Hans has done many a diff for both my bothers, and even me or a HJ ute I had when I was a P plater. It had a 350 up front and a Hans built 9" down the back. I broke everything else but never a diff. He has been around for years and I am yet to hear a bad word about him.
Hopefully your not about to change that ;)

The proper Detroit tru tracs have noise regardless how they are setup, even mine winds I guess the exhaust just ain't loud enough still :-)

The 31's will be your best bet more than likely put them in and never take them out again.

No mate not about to change that. I have never used him but I have heard many good things about his work even as much as 25 years ago.

Have you got a price because I just got my axles replaced to 31 spline billets from 28 splines a few weeks ago, mainly because I was changing the stud pattern.
