Am envious of how far ahead of me you all are. My car is in the paint shop and I am away for work until January so out of my hands till then.

Only been there once but I found the roads in Tasmania fantastic compared to my experience living in Sydney

Not only good scenery but nice tar and I am not sure how to describe it best but it looks coarse enough that water would drain from it well

Although I wont be finished mine till mid next year at the earliest I would be keen on some sort of rally like that

Something else that looks fun is Autocross. See it i the USA magazines. I get to Popular Hot Rodding and it often comes up. Day out on open tar area around witches hats etc. Sort of like go to whoa but with corners.

Cheers,

Ha Daz, what revs are you expecting out of yours at 100? When I used the calculators for mine it should be doing 2000rpm at 100. I thought that wasn't too bad. I'm more worried that first will be too short. I have just checked again and 1st should get 60km at 6000. 67km at 6800 which is where the cam runs out.

I guess I will find out soon enough

Hi Grant, foggy arsed memory but I think 100km/h would be around 2000 rpm which would suit me perfectly.

Nig, such a shame about you diff. If you have the parts already it will probably end up cheaper and easier than changing a gearbox. Mine has a tru trac in it to keep both wheels turning under power, and allows you to turn corners without it ratcheting like a locker.

Tom I too have been to Tassie once and I swore I would go back on a bike. The roads are awesome. The Autocross sounds like a motokana, and yes they are great fun.

Mark, thanks for the kind words.

I got it off the trailer at my brothers tonight and took it up the street for the first time. He wanted me to make sure that it went through the gears without any dramas so we were confident of no issues on the dyno. It was actually quite hard to drive. It was pig rooting through the gears and not able to drive slow and smooth. I was in second at about 30kms and accelerated reasonably but not that hard to try and smoothen it out when it stepped out big time and took us up the street sideways. Couldn't get the grin off my face. It happened to easy. Mind you I do only have 205 shitty tyres on the back at the moment that a standard VB commodore could spin!

Well tomorrow will reveal all. I'm hoping that he will be able to tune it to give me about 300hp at the wheels for starters. That could be a bit ambitious but I will wait and see how it goes. I will be sure to video it on my phone and get it on YouTube over the weekend

Targa West is on this weekend and I would love to one day give it a go (for fun - nothing serious). My drama is building a car within the rules. It makes things limited and very difficult when I look at what I want to get out of a torrie mod. Just a shame we have not got a real good road circuit here in Perth as Barb's is next to useless. Autocross has really grown in popularity in the USA but I still like racing on a good circuit. Just a shame we can't steal the mountain off nsw and bring it over to where it should be "In Gods Country". Nothing better than to legally be able to use a torrie to drive fast around corners.

I was put off taking a bike to Tassie by the number of squashed Wombats and Wallabies etc

Would prefer not to hit one in a car but on a bike would be very un-fun

I used to have an orange hatch back, love it

Keep up the great work

Try dodging a kangaroo on an 1100 Kwaka doing 130+ at night on a country road.

Was enough for me to put bikes into permanent retirement.

I hear you with hitting animals. I hit a dog on a CBR1000 years ago. I was only doing about 60. Hurt like hell and got me off bikes for a few years. When the bug bit again I went Harley. I thought that would slow me down. It didn't work. I have ran 12:30 on one of my home built choppers, and 11:21 on my current Vrod. Oh well

Be cool to hear how the tune goes ! :D

And luckily, no dramas with hitting roos, wombats, etc out here..... just gotta watch out for the illegals, lol.

Well the YouTube video needs to wait. Never got through the tune and up to the proper power runs.
Long story short,
Engine kept giving mixed signals and the guy tuning was constantly chasing his tail. In the end he went to give a rev in forth to see how it would go and the engine shut off. After a lot of mucking around he found the pedal stopped sending signals to the throttle body after about half throttle. Now on the advise of the auto elec I'm chasing another throttle body.

So the last couple days went like this,
Friday:
Dyno, home, insert beer here
Saturday:
Doctors appointment, movies, lunch, insert beer here!

Now sore head!!!!
Photos and better explanation tomorrow.
Feel free to ask what you would like explained. (really sore head now)

Did very little today, just a few bits and pieces. Got the door trims in the front and rear, and got the drivers seat belt in. Trying to get the car to a pont where I can drive it around to get different things done. The exhaust guy needs to fix and tidy up quite a bit. Not happy with him at all. I want the engine builder to hear it and check the lifter preload. It sounds very tappety. Thoughts are it needs longer push rods. Need to get the injectors cleaned and checked. I think there are a couple letting fuel In while the car is sitting. Every time I start up after a while sitting it seemed to miss fire for the first minute or so until it cleans ts self out. I need to get hold of another throttle body to sort the compatibility issue out. I also need to set up the air cleaner and intake pipe with the sensor welded in.
As you can see I have a few things to do over the next week or so. As LS1rana said in his post, it's now the small items that become mile stones. When you do a small item for the last time it feels great knowing it's there for good and it's time to do the finish offs.

It is like the first 90% of the project takes 10% of the time, and the last 10% of the project takes 90% of the time, lol...

Hopefully you can sort out the injector and other related issues ok. (and get the air filter and sensors on it, )

What have you got planned for the intake pipe?  I got some 4" tubing and a pod filter and housing and I have an idea of how I want to do it but haven't got around to it yet.

Sucks about the tappy noises...and the suspect injector/s.

Hope its something simple.

I haven't had my exhaust made yet.  What did your bloke do which needs fixing?

For the air intake I am going to just turn it towards the head light on the opposite side to the battery and put a pod on it. I will also make it so ican connect an air box for when the engineer inspects it. To get the air pipe through without any issues I am going to get the radiator filler neck taken away from the face and put on the side.

The exhaust guy made a mess of the pipe. He didn't put it on the ground and check clearances for a start. Even from just being on the trailer there is rub marks on it from being too close to suspension bolts and other bits. It has at least three leaks I can pick, and one of the flanges has only been tacked and not welded completely. I'm not a happy camper in that respect.

Well I got the radiator out and injectors out ready for drop off tomorrow. Bolted in the passenger seat belt and put the front bumper on. Bar needs rechroming just as the rear one does, but will suffice for now. Also I located a throttle body in Sydney this afternoon for the right price. It will be sent to me tomorrow and should be in my hands by the time the injectors and radiator are back in. Baby steps are happening.
Spoke to the engineer today too. He sounds happy with whats been done so far. He is going to send me instructions on how to set up for the torsion test he is going to do. This way I can check it to make sure it will pass before he comes to do his inspection. He has asked me to get a weigh bridge ticket too. He wants the cat to weigh more than it did stock. He wants it at least 1200kg. Hopefully it will. I asked why he wants it heavier and his comment was that this way it shows the extra chasis bracing is of strength and has added to the weight. Also he says that every kilo is better cause he has less chance of being asked why he passed such a large engine in a light car. What ever his reasons, I will make sure a weigh it full of fuel and maybe a couple hidden extras ;)

An engineer making that as justification for a pass is very strange.

Very strange indeed, weight does not equal strength although maximum engine capacity is often based on factory kerb weight.

The following kerb weights are from the book "60 years of Holden".

SS hatch 1232 kg.

A9X hatch 1242 kg.

A9X sedan 1306 kg.

I expect your hatch will weigh well over 1300 kg just from the drivetrain and brake modifications.

I don't know if the NCOP applies in VIC however usually engine size is limited by the factory kerb weight of the car not the actual weight.

Under the NCOP the following rule applies.

The mass of the vehicle referred to in Tables LA1, LA2 and LA3 is the original (unmodified) tare mass of the model vehicle fitted with the largest engine available for the model in Australia but without optional accessories (air conditioning, tow bars etc.). The mass of the vehicle, whether it is a sedan, station wagon, utility, etc., should be based on the heaviest sedan version of the model (not station wagon version) sold in Australia.

I do hear what you guys are saying. And just for the record, this engineer is not what I call dodgy or easily lead. However, I have used him several times over the years when I have built "Custom Bikes". Basically Harley choppers. If I was able to justify why and how I went a bout something, he was happy. Maybe I have got his reasoning a bit twisted, but this is what he wants, therefore I shall do it. I know he works very closely with Vic Roads and would be very surprised if there was something adrift. That said as we all know it comes down to interpretation of the documents. Will see how I go. For interest I will keep you all posted, and will try to get it as correct as I can.

Flares?? They create drag and slow me down!! Flares are only for guys that have a size complex! :stirpot:  :thebird:

Hi Romper, had dramas on the dyno so power runs. Will find out in another couple of weeks when it goes back on. I've got a few small issues to sort out first.

Nah.. Flares will create extra wind resistance and slow your car down.   :driving:

Car looks super good! keep it up not far to go.
