Well, an unexpected guest happened to drop in less than an hour ago. Talked for about five minutes, went home, came back with a little late birthday present for Heathie :spoton: This will make my job substancially easier.
Posted Image
...he even suggested converting to UC tail lights
Posted Image
Someone else was jealous of the attention the Torrie and a tenth were getting, and decided he would join in the photoshoot
Posted Image
...stop moving!

That's better.

And I am still wanting to look at any Toranas being cut up, because this section is far from perfect, but at least it gives me a bit to work with.

Does anyone wanna guess who the unexpected guest was? hehe

Heath, I drove past earlier today and it isn't done yet. Sounds like you're wasting your holiday time.

I had five mates over getting pissed and I only just managed to get the bastards out of my house a few minutes ago. Then I mowed the lawn, and i'm out to the car soonish, but the only grinder I have access to (4") is at dad's and I dunno when I'm heading up there next.

More good news:
My school does have a mig welder that I can practise on. Once my solar car is finished (comp is in just over three weeks time), I'll be in the metaltech room every day and every free period learning to weld. Still don't know what welder I'm actually going to use on my car though... but it's better than not having any access to a welder full stop.

I don't know anything about TIG. I know that I will use a MIG on that section of my car, I just meant to say that i don't know which MIG i will use, as I don't own one. Didn't make it that obvious.

Anyway, back out to the car.

lol no thanks. I just got the rear window out, but I happen to have also got some grey sealant/gue kinda shit on my hand, and it's like... melted onto my hand (while I was holding the bucket I presume), and I literally can't get the bastard off!

Should I continue washing my hand? Or pull the front screen out top?

I dunno where to get it from, but we got some sticky remover stuff here. Its made from Orange extract or something, and its fantastic. When i pulled the front window out i just squirted it on the windscreen sealent, left it for a few minutes and the stuff came straight off.

I managed to get it off in the end; just lots of scrubbing etc.

I'm still surprised I managed to get the window out myself actually. Last time Chopper gave me a hand, and people have told me that it's impossible to do without two people, but yeah it worked out fine, maybe Torana rear windows are just easy compared to most windows? I feel proud of myself :P

As I said when we removed the last one, the more rust there is, the easier it is to remove.

This one was great though, I'm still blown away by how little rust there was.

The pics make the rust look worse than it is; it ain't bad at all. Bit of fibreglassing will do the trick, if that!. I just hope putting windows in isn't hard. :P

When you get yr pop's 4" grinder, go to Bunnings and get the 1mm cutting discs. Cuts like a knife!

Heath, practice MIG on some 1.4mm scrap before you attack the car. Get used to the way the heat distorts panels. Short welds, stop start technique (just getting used to this myself). If you start blowing holes, metal is too hot, too much heat. Spot new panel in first, then 25mm max. weld lengths at a time (stop start technique gets round this a bit, but still got to be careful). Material is thin, so you can afford to move the gun fairly quick.

Personally, cut out and weld in as little as possible, as it just creates more work. Use Mig to spot weld on some screws at try pull as much of it out with a slide hammer as possible (screws will pull off if lightly spotted, but that's normal).

Same with grinder, manage the heat, don't work one area intensely. Metal should be cool to touch at all times after grinding/sanding. Slowly slowly catches the monkey.

Need to do the same repair on the race wreck on the bottom rear quarter. Will try take some pics. I'm forming up my own replacement panels.

Other basic tools you will need are body file, and speed file (long flat sandpaper thing).

speed file (long flat sandpaper thing)

Is that just a long block with course sandpaper stretched over it?

Need to do the same repair on the race wreck on the bottom rear quarter. Will try take some pics

That would be very helpful, thanks

And yes, I want to try with an old body panel (cutting it up then welding it back together presentably) after I learn the basics at school next term.

Cheers Pat

Like the one I dropped around, or are you talking about your parents?
