It would appear that the Borg Warner M78 is known as the GM 9 bolt.

Powertrax 1931-LR

I would confirm with powertrax that the 1931-LR is the correct part.

It looks like powertrax do not make a lock right for the GM 7.75 Borg Warner Australian 9 Bolt.

hey rory is it at all possible to get a pic of the entire diff installed in the car?.....i would like to see how the pinion entry lines up in the tail shaft tunnel...i had a VN BW cut down to use two passenger side axles which made it similar length to torana(and skyline it seems) but the pinion was right over to the drivers side of the tunnel.....after reading this thread i have struck a deal with my cousin to swap this diff for a complete skyline diff minus gears(i want 3.08 anyway)....just want to make sure this wont still be a problem.....hope you can help

the pinion has to be off to one side due to the cast centre having to be located between the two upper control arm mounts.

Makes bugger all difference...sits 25mm closer to the tunnel on the drivers side...will get an undercar pic when I get it back from the exhaust man.

I am just wondering how easy it is to adapt the brakes on the back.

Would Torana or HQ drums be able to bolt straight onto the R31 flanges?

Or

How easy is it to set up the rear discs to work with the standard Master Cylinder etc without costing the world?

Also, are all R31 Diffs LSD? Or are they single spinners (Only the GTS and Silhouette are lsd)

Cheers

Matt

I'd say stick with the disc setup rather than downgrade to drums, just get the stud pattern changed, Rorys just using a standard torana disc brake master cylinder-I think he removed the rear line restrictor???? Not all R31 had LSD-not many at all-if you want a LSD for it just get one from a VN-VS commodore, or try ebay theres a guy in VIC selling brand new LSD hemispheres ready to go for $550, 2nd hand ones seem to go for up to $300 so the new ones are good value

Thanks NOS,

One of my mates is doing the conversion, and is just trying to work it all out. If his all goes to plan, We are going to do it for my GF's UC, as it seems like the best option!

Use std Torana parts/master/booster etc...pull the olive out of the master for the rear brakes...see car thread or it might be in here....use UC handbrake to pull both cables...works fine.

Good point,

Would the Skyline brake set-up sit out further than a HQ drum brake set-up would?

If so, would that make mounting HQ (Or Torana) Drums even closer to the standard overall track width?

From memory Rorys is about the same as Torana width/track, maybe a couple of MM out, mine is actually 23mm wider per side, which is great for clearance between the tyre/rim and the inner guard/chassis rail, but limits the outer rim width that I can run-on the simmons a 5inch outer is about it. The other thing with a narrow diff with disc brakes is, it can be a prick to get the shocks onto the diff mount without removing the disc backing plate/or caliper

I think when it was done they shortened the housing to torana length, but with the commodore brakes theres a spacer between the disc and the caliper mount, the skyline setup doesnt have that spacer, doesnt bother me though as it gives more clearance on the inside and suits my wheels anyway

Id say if you wanted to save on having the diff shortened too much the skyline brakes are the way to go, I only stuck with the commodore setup as the diff was already done in a car I wrecked.
