DJ. You just paint engines in normal 2k don't you? Can't do metallic I'm assuming? And do you clear them?

Matt, yeah better than the other one in many ways at least. It won't all be painted by the end of summer because I haven't got my fibreglass panels yet! But like I've still gotta do the engine bay and stuff, it will take ages, but I'm getting as much as I can out of the way atm because I have a fair bit of free time. Don't get this oppurtunity often!

For Matt, and anyone else wondering, this is the (massive) tin of 'PROTEC' bog I'm talking about
Posted Image

I haven't done a whole lot that looks impressive in photos, but the roof now has chicken pox and I've almost got both rear quarters in primer, minus the welded rust repair I need to do in the bottom of one. Beaver panel is done too. Prepping the cowl is always a bit of a bastard on a car that has been resprayed, because the person before you will have never prepped it properly before they painted it :P Anyway spent a while just scratching the crap off in the vents, cut it back best i could and gave it a squirt.

Posted Image

For anyone interested who hasn't done a lot of bodywork before, this is how I am doing this car, I didn't use this particular method on my last Torana. With the panels on this car, because the paint is generally acceptable, I have no reason to go back to bare metal, but it does have a lot of little 'chips' that have rusted, and they have to be dealt with properly, so the process I am using is: Cleaning the panels decently, bare metalling around any chipped paint and rust converting them, roughening those spots up and filling them with body filler, then shaping the filler roughly with a speed file, and guide coating the whole panel in Aussie Export black and wetsanding the whole lot with 320, finding any lows or highs. If the car was perfectly straight, that would be all the work I would have to do before priming the panels

What do you think of the bog Heath?
When Mike and I were using some on my rear 1/4 I was quite happy with the way it behaved, it does not seem to
clog the paper anywhere near as fast as other types I have used.

Mick, I see myself as a bit of a Larry Perkins.
I read somewhere once that Larry's cars were predominately white as white is the cheapest colour to buy and easiest to repair (compared to dark colours).
Also, the #11 was chosen as at that time the #1 was the cheapest sticker to buy.

Larry Perkins:
Race driver.
Race engineer.
Innovator.
Team owner.
Often the underdog.
MULTIPLE BATHURST WINNER

And a little bit of the great P.B........Bathurst 72' where the little 6 kicks V8 arse.

Look out Mick............here comes the GREASE SLAPPER!!!!!

Yeah mate Protec 609 polyurethane.

You can do metallic with a level of success, though i havnt done it personally (will one day).

Just use clear over base system as you would on the car panels, its good for about 160 deg c.

No need for clear over a polyurethane color, and its solvent/chemical resistant, just degrease and hose and bing, pretty again.

I do the big bastard truck engines and shit in it at work, cause im lazy and in a hurry i just spray the whole lot, and the only place it burns off is the exhaust manifold and the turbine housing. Even the dump pipe after the turbo the paint stays on, so its pretty good shit.

Cheers.

hahahhaaa. rodomo you're not doing a very good job of covering up the fact you're shitting your pants! Won't be long til there's two round headlights right up the arse of one of these boats Commodores.

Weather was gay today to say the least. I just got the roof all flat and ready for a squirt of primer, but it's wet and cold so I'm not even gonna bother spraying it until a better day

Gonna need to get my hands on a welder very soon haha need to deal with the rust on the LHS of the rear screen area...

Here's a photo I took a few days ago:
Posted Image
I reckon it's looking pretty good, got a lot more confidence the second time around

I borrowed a welder from a mate, it's a little mig with one of those disposable bottles on the side, I don't want to use his overpriced gas so I just put some gasless wire in it and it's working alright, I'll just replace the wire I use when I give it back, and I'm doing some small rust repairs on his KE70 instead of paying him to rent it. Sweet

Did a few repairs today, none of them are too flash but progress is progress, I would probably be taking a lot more care if the car was on a rotissery, but it won't run as is and I can't even really jack it up properly on soft dirt, so some of my working positions are really awkward/uncomfortable and hense the repairs are a bit rushed.

Bit of weight reduction lol

More little window surround rust spots, just ground out most of the rust and bent up a little piece to weld in there, not the best way of doing it but the most appropriate and convenient :P

Rust in footwell, got a bit of rust I have to do separately underneath this one as well
