Been busy priming and sanding. Just spent the last 2 weekends wet sanding, which was nice. Here are some backlogged photos (don't really show much).

Don't remember what happened here.. Think I had to fix the bottom lip gap

PA220002_zps86d88bc9.jpg

PA220003_zps33c0b129.jpg

The a quick coat of epoxy over all the major repairs before some 2k over the top wet on wet.

PA220006_zps4e7c4e1a.jpg

PA220010_zps5748c227.jpg

All the remaining panels have had their initial cut with 180, and primed again.

And everything has been wet sanded with 320. Was good to see what the panels look like wet that's for sure! Pretty happy over all. Some panels are ready for final prime. Some panels needed 1 or 2 small imperfections worked with some 2k glaze.

The bonnet was last to get high filled, so I did the initial cut with 180. Only some very shallow lows to be filled and that's ready for final prime.

Just out of curiosity I started to wet sand the engine bay. I did one side with 600 wet, but took a while. So did the right sand in 320 wet and no breakthroughs. So when its time to paint I will reguide coat, hit it with 600 and be done (hopefully)

So wasn't happy with drivers side quarter body line. So removed all primer and filler, and re did it. There were high spots that needed to be bumped down especially.

Layed a single coat of epoxy followed by some high build.

Bought the paint. Decided to test the top coat gun and the paint today. Prepped the jambs of this door with 320 and a red scotchbrite. I hit alot of bare metal so I sprayed a single coat of epoxy, let it flash off real good (an hour or so) and went over the top with the urethane colour. 3 wet/ medium coats. These are phone pics so excuse the quality.

A bit orange peely, the gun I wasn't really used to. (said inlet pressure of 19psi - but it wouldn't really atomise?? So I had to bump it up).

But all in all, good to see some colour and it was shiny off the gun. See how it looks when It sets up for a day or two.

It's barbados in solid 2k gloss. Gonna be a challenge to paint it I reckon but see how I go ;)

I reckon you'll be okay so long as you paint it at night, with the lights off, while wearing extra-dark sunnies...

Damn that is BRIGHT!

Ang done a little bit more.

Sanded down the other door and the underside of the hatch lid. Had to feather edge some chips, and fill some lows. I didn't go crazy, as the car isnt a show car.

I gave them a single coat of epoxy and layed the colour down. Here are some pics.

P1280018_zpsf37af608.jpg

P1280015_zps3c87ef4e.jpg

I was going to do the underside of the bonnet, but not happy with the way it came out.

I'm actually going to strip it (the underside) to bare metal, epoxy then paint it in one go I reckon. Start fresh. I had poorly feathered sections and made a mess with the seam sealer. After I primed the underside initially I notice the primer cracks when the skin flexes in the sealed joints (only has to be half a mm of movement). I rather just use something similar to the blobs from factory I guess.

thought it was barbados, Love it i think the LX Hatch owned by Mark House is absolutely stunning! the photo's are a little deceptive with the true colour. You'll be right blowin the paint on, the light colours are pretty forgiving, its the dark stuff you gotta watch. I'm sure you will get a good finish just like the rest of the work you've done so far not much to pick on  :spoton:

Thanks Marc, encouraging words from the master mechanic!

Done more today.

This morning I had a mobile dustless media blasting bloke come down. He stripped the underside of my bonnet and the door and bonnet hinges.

Came out awesome - and was good to start fresh. Once the original green was removed, the oxidation of the metal underneath was shocking, so glad I did.

There was a crack here, so weld it up. And ground down with my new little air powered roloc grinder. If I could do the metal work all over again, I would of used this :<_<:

Painted some more today - finally getting there

Straight off the gun - not bad for a DIYer I guess - I dont wanna go cut and polish these areas so happy with the outcome. Light hand buff in the future might be on the cards.

No worries, Subzero Mobile Abrasive Blasting. Owner of the business is Luigi, highly recommended. As quoted, friendly, and very aware of the damage any type of blasting can do so he dials down his machines as required plus nozzle control. Good stuff

Great results mate, you plan on blocking back and blowing some clear coat over it as well?

Not sure at this stage, probably not. For the body I'll most likely need to cut and buff it for a nice finish but because this is 2k single stage gloss the clear is not necessary.

Final sanded the shell. I started final sanding the doors but drivers came up with a very soft low spot, so it needs more work. Since I go back to work on Monday after nearly 6 weeks off I didn't want to leave the shell sitting too long to collect contaminates as I get the door ready, so masked everything up and shot the shell.

straight off the gun. 2 runs. heaps of dust nibs to contend with. Maybe a very small amount of dry spray. I plan to colour sand and buff the body, so should end up looking ok for a shed job.

more done.

Need to block back the doors and shoot again. Too many runs to simply shave with a razor blade. Luckily I noticed the terrible application after the first coat, so I stopped rather than wasting paint. All the other panels turned out good.

Well it's been a frustrating couple of weeks. Remember the runs I was talking about? Well I finally saw the doctor and they gave me some stool hardener.. Wait.. the paint runs - that's right. I blocked back the 2 doors and the hatch lid. While I was at it, I noticed the front passenger guard's body line was not in line with the rest of the side. So I re-blocked that guard and sorted out the body line position. Pisser.

All is good, so I gave all those problem areas a nice 3 wet coats of paint. Beautiful.. Open up the PA door of the shed to let everything breathe and walk away.

Oh no, a gust of wind went through the shed and pulled up the masking paper on the passenger side side and stuck to the door!!! Peeled it off and it couldn't be saved. So once again I blocked that door back, masked everything up and repainted the door. While I was at it, I found the hatch vents, scuffed them up and gave them some nice wet coats.

All good, all done. Pulled the car out into the sun (ish) and started sorting out some minor jobs and gathering parts for the next stage. I'm quite happy with the outcome of all this labour. Glad body work and paint stage is pretty much completed. And within my set time frame goal of July 2015
