I have finally got the 6 points of the Roll Cage in. Not much left to do to it.

Attached File  Roll Cage 20.jpg   35.79K   13 downloads
I welded the mounts in over the rear chassis rail for a bit of strength then welded the back stay in which lined up with the top of the bend on the main hoop.

Attached File  Roll Cage 17.jpg   39.57K   11 downloads
All lines up straight

Attached File  Roll Cage 18.jpg   43.51K   11 downloads

Attached File  Roll Cage 19.jpg   36.88K   11 downloads

I only plan to have the one diagonal across the back stays as there are 2 across the main hoop, just in case I want to put a passenger seat in.
Soon it will be onto the seat position.

I won't be doing any more tho the roll cage till I have done some work inside the car. I am looking at two areas at the moment, the pedal box and engine mounts. Both these will affect the position of the seat which is next.

Attached File  Pedal Box 01.jpg   35.33K   12 downloads

As you can see there is not a lot of room. I had to cut out pretty much all of the steering tunnel and original pedal pivot points. The Tilton assembly is a rather large bit of kit to squeeze in there.

Attached File  Pedal Box 02.jpg   33.12K   8 downloads

I used a bit of 50x50x5 angle to mount it up. Will have to look at gusseting down to the fire wall for strength.

Attached File  Pedal Box 03.jpg   37.85K   8 downloads

Like I said not much room!!!

Attached File  Engine Mount 05.jpg   46.67K   8 downloads

The engine mounts have been a challenge. I ended up using a bit of 50x50 SHS for the sub frame mount.

Attached File  Engine Mount 06.jpg   40.77K   9 downloads

There is 5mm clearance between the sump and sub frame.

Attached File  Engine Mount 07.jpg   38.32K   10 downloads

I have to put in a plug here for Velocity who supplied the Tuff Mounts. If you buy them off the shelf you will get a drivers side and passengers side mount. As I have to build custom mounts for the dry sump clearance the mounts supplied didn't work. I rang Jason up who runs Velocity and we went through what I was up to and he sent me via airbag mounts that are even each side (unlike the standard for LS to Torana). He has done this at no cost to me as long as I send the original ones back when I have finished mocking up. Don't get this very often these days, so if you are looking at doing something with engine mounts give him a call, you wont regret it.

Cheers

I'd be thinking of bracing the cage to the b pillar from the door x bars not the main hoop?

Hi Datto, thanks for having a look.
Yeah I plan on bracing the B pillar as well as the A pillar. B pillar wont be done like in the picture you posted as my main hoop is a bit to far back to do that practically. Full_Noise is on the right track, I will brace from the side intrusion bars as well as having a brace to the top of the B pillar from the lateral half rollbars.

Not much to add right now. I spoke to the EO during the week and he advised that if I had a roll bar behind the dash between the two half lateral roll bars then it will be allowed to cut away the original mounts on the dash for the steering column. So with that in mind out came the grinder and I cut the lower part of the dash out, I am keeping it to re-fit what I can later. Since that came out it made it easier to weld up the pedal box mounts, which are now done.

Attached File  Pedal Box 04.jpg   33.53K   14 downloads

I will put the roll bar in and then work on the dash steering column mounts which will bolt up to the original mounts on the column. Slowly slowy................

I have to cover up all holes in the cabin at some point and the rear parcel shelf will come out. It hasn't had the speaker holes cut out and looks in good nick. Anyone who wants an un-cut parcel shelf for a restoration let me know.

Did you cut the rear shelf out for no other reason?
Usually a few blanks of sheet metal cut in a circle and tacked in 4 spots with a mig welder over the holes is enough to satisfy.

I cut out the parcel shelf and sold it!! Sold it to a bloke on the forum. A9X said to me one day that there would be some who wants that as it was un un-cut shelf. I will fill it in with Aluminium sheet later. Looks a bit crude at the moment but I will tidy it up a fair bit before the Ally sheet goes in.

Got the seat mounts tacked in after work today, using 50x25 RHS to mount the seat to. Only a dummy fit at the moment as it sits a bit to upright for me. The seat is a Cobra Evolution Pro which is FIA approved. When I put it in for the first time and stood back I thought "S#*t that looks big in there!!" Anyway, after sitting in it, the position is not to bad to reach the pedals, just need to lay it back a touch. There is multiple mounting points on the seat rail, will put them central and work on getting the RHS into the right spot.

With having the engine mounts done I had a bit of spare time after work tonight so I had a trial fit of the engine in the car. Doesn't fit, really tight on the fire wall. I have seen others face the same problem in other build threads. I am going to cut back the seam on the fire wall and weld it up to get the clearance needed.

Had to cut away a fair bit of the trans tunnel to get the Jerico in. As you can see, the gear stick will sit a fair way back from a normal 4 speed gearbox gear stick. It actually looks in about the right spot for the seat!!

that really surprises me that you had to cut the tunnel away.
The Jericho was such a sweet tight housing.

while you are on your mounts, don't forget to include a mounting point for the fifth point, between your legs.

If you need to borrow a set of belts, just yell.

I had to cut away the passenger side of the tunnel as the gear selector and tie rods are that side, it would have been really tight if I did't cut it out.

I will be working on it on Easter Saturday if you feel like a visit.

With the seat in the right spot I was looking at the steering during the week. Today I made a start by tacking in a tube between the "A" pillar tubes. Fitted the seat and pedals and cut a plate to mount to the tube I tacked in. It turned out to be in a good spot. I was worried that the wheel would be to far away from me sitting in the seat, I have to keep the steering column original as I have said in earlier posts.

Attached File  Steering 01.jpg   35.16K   7 downloads

I bought a steering boss and a Lifeline quick release for the steering wheel. The wheel itself I have got from my mate, full_noise from the forum, thanks for that mate. It's a Sparco 300m wheel.

Attached File  Steering 02.jpg   41.42K   8 downloads

I have covered the wheel in rags to keep my grubby hands off it. I mean that literally........
It's a nice fit. I admit to sitting there and day dreaming. Snaped out of it as there's no point to dreaming about it!!

Attached File  Steering 03.jpg   35.46K   8 downloads

Attached File  Steering 04.jpg   34.48K   7 downloads

I removed the seat and pedals and made a plate to strengthen it. Will weld it all up later.

How long has it been!!!! Can't believe the year is almost out and it was May since I last worked on the car. Since then the car has found a new spot, we have moved at work and the car found a nice spot at our new place. Race car workshop is great! All the work in our move has settled down etc and I have now got the time to get back on it.
I really want to get the cage finished, it's been bugging me when I looked at it over the last 6 months and how close it is. I asked a favour from A9X to borrow a 5 point race harness so I could get the height of the harness bar. Cheers for your help Mark.
Attached File  01.jpg   101.4K   5 downloads

With that taken care of it came time to start twirling the car on the rotissarie and finish off the welding. Some of the spots were a real pain and ultra hard to get to for a neat and good weld. In the end I am happy with the result, all welds will hold up.

I am looking at gusseting the side intrusion X bars. Should get a bit of extra strength this way.
I haven't tacked that bit in yet.
Attached File  08.jpg   73.29K   6 downloads

It's great to get started again, I am happy that the cage is fully welded and I only have the gusseting to do.
